Wrong Belief (John #7)

Text: John 2:23-25

We just read about people who believed in Jesus Christ and He did not respond to them.  We say just believe in Jesus, but apparently that’s wrong.  The Lord Jesus Christ is looking for a very specific belief.  We tend to have a sloppy understanding of salvation and true Christianity.

Wrong Belief is based on your Senses – vs 23 many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

  • Exciting the Senses
    • Responding to their senses, in other words, sensual, carnal.  It is a carnal belief system.
    • The miracles looked good.  The band sounded good.  The feeling I had felt good.  How many people have responded to the excitement of their own flesh and said it was an act of God?
  • James 3:15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
  • Satisfying the Flesh
    • The crowd is looking for convenience.
    • He took away my sickness and now I feel better.  And it feels better to feel better, so I believe in Jesus now.
  • There is an unclean spirit working today drawing people out who want to see signs.  The spirit is unclean because it claims to be the Holy Spirit of God, but preys on people looking for signs and miracles.  The bait is the signs and miracles and the hook is the lust of the flesh.  When people seek after signs – charismatic group, pentecostal group – two things are happening.
    • First, people are being drawn away of their own lusts – convenience that satisfies the flesh.  Jesus said Wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign.  John 2:18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?  John 6:30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
    • Second, they are being drawn out by an unclean spirit towards the work of the devil.  2 Thessalonians 2:7-10 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,  And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

Faith is the Victory

  • Jesus Christ is looking for a very specific response.  It is a response to His voice.  Faith is not exercised from a visual display.  Faith is a response to the words of God.
  • My sheep hear my voice.  Not My sheep see my signs.  Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the words of God.
  • Faith is the right kind of belief.  It is the belief that God responds to.  Without faith it is impossible to please God.
  • Received his word Acts 2:41
  • Luke 16:19- If they HEAR not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
  • Go to church so Jesus will fix my marriage.  Jesus doesn’t wave a magic wand to fix a marriage.  The Holy Spirit of God directs you to the words of God either to a pastor who preaches and ministers the words of God so that you are fed with the words of God and as you apply the preaching and teaching from God to your marriage, it gets fixed.
  • He will take the words of God and deal with your fornication or adultery like he did the woman at the well.  You say fix my relationship and Jesus says, quit living in fornication.
  • You say fix my finances and Jesus says quit being covetous.  He told the rich young ruler to sell all he had, give your money to the poor and follow me.  Not give your money to me and follow me.  Jesus told the guy your problem is that your covetous, get that sin out from between you and me.
  • You ask Jesus to fix this and He points out the sin and says, Get rid of that.
  • Acts 8 and the Ethiopian eunuch we read about him getting saved.  The question wasn’t do you believe Jesus Christ saved you from your sin now pray with me, all Philip asked him is Believest thou that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.  He said I believe.  The eunuch was responding to what he had read and Philip’s preaching.  He was responding to the words of God.  It isn’t the words that the eunuch said that got him saved, it is what he was responding to – he HEARD the voice of the Shepherd from the scriptures and he responded accordingly.

Wrong Belief is one that Jesus Christ Ignores – vs 24 Jesus did not commit himself unto them

  • Some of you here may think Christianity is a one way street.  I show up and God is happy.  I was raised as a Christian and God is happy with me.  I feel like I’m saved so God is happy with me.  I’m here Lord, so that means you’re here too.
  • Fellowship is on His terms.
  • Hebrews 12:16-17 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.  For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
    • Nicodemus is an illustration of the “believers” in 2:23.  In 3:2 Nicodemus tells Jesus he believes Him, but Jesus Christ immediately lets him know regeneration is a two way street.  Nicodemus talks about believing because he’s seen the miracles and Jesus says you haven’t seen anything.  You haven’t seen the Kingdom of God Nicodemus.  You just watched me do miracles, but you haven’t seen anything because the Holy Spirit of God hasn’t birthed you yet.
    • Go to church if Jesus can heal me.  Well, what if Jesus doesn’t heal you?  Any healing is only temporary.  You realize eventually you die.  He doesn’t fix this body permanently until the redemption of the body in a glorified form.
  • Matthew 13:21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.  Mark 4:17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.
  • 1 Thessalonians 2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
  • If you aren’t responding to the words of God, then whatever you’re responding to is irellevent to God.  Any belief that is NOT a response to the words of God is not a belief accompanied by the effective work of the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • What they are won with is what they are won to.  When Jesus stops making their life convenient, they will be gone.
  • If Jesus Christ is going to deal with you it will be through a witness/preacher, with the words of God and on the basis of sin, righteousness, and judgment.
  • The good news is He’s putting the call out now.  If you’ve never responded to Jesus Christ about your sin – Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Jesus Christ knows what’s in you – vs 25 he knew what was in man

  • Your heart can even fool you.  Jeremiah 17:9-10 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? It’s like a slippery snake.  Always justifying itself.  Never quite able to pin it down.  But the Lord said, I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
  • Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
  • Romans 2:11-12, 16 For there is no respect of persons with God.  For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
