Bread of Life (John #19)

Text: John 6:24-59

Priority of Bread (vss 24-29)

  • Bread is the top  priority of man under the sun
    • Ecclesiastes 6:7 All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
    • Solomon in Ecclesiastes says the man under the sun who is living for material things and has no thought for heavenly things says everything he does is for his mouth.
  • Proverbs 16:26 He that laboureth laboureth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him.
  • Philippians 3:19-20 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.) For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
  • labor not for the meat that perisheth (vs 27)
    • PRIORITY OF BREAD – Jesus Christ is not saying don’t work
    • You guys have spent more time, energy, and money trying to find me for a free meal than had you just gone to HEB to get groceries.
    • Spend more time on bread for the belly than the Bread from heaven
    • We say, well, I have to work.  Are you saying I need to quit my job so I can just pray and read my Bible?!  No.  But why don’t you also say, I have to pray?
      • I’d like to meet with you or do business, but I have to hear the word of God preached.
      • Can I take a rain check on getting together because I have to be at church for the prayer meeting.
      • Or how about we reschedule that meeting because I HAVE to spend time with my family in church getting fed.
    • If you insist on working for salvation to impress God, here it is.  These verses in the Bible tell you what the work is (vss 28-29)
    • Work for your salvation by believing what Jesus said.

Rejected Bread (vss 30-36)

  • THERE IS SUCH THING AS A DUMB QUESTION  – What sign shewest…? Our fathers did eat manna in the desert (vs 31)
    • He just fed over 5000 people with five loaves and two fishes and they want another sign?!
    • The question is dumb because it’s insincere.
    • We treat the Lord that way.
  • Manna and Jesus Christ are very similar
    • daily provision
    • gathered as much as needed
    • Israel began to hate manna – Numbers 21:5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.
    • I am the bread of heaven (vs 33) Ye also have seen me; and believe not (vs 36)
    • Your flesh and my flesh will never appreciate or enjoy God’s provision.

God’s Bread (vss 37-43)

    • Jesus Christ is God manifest in the flesh.  The work that He does is the work of God.
    • POSSESSION of eternal life, not temporary life
    • PARENT – God as Father, you’re a child of God
    • POWER – power of God, sin is not more powerful than God Almighty
    • life giving substance
  • I am the bread (vs 41) Jews murmured

Promised Bread (vss 44-48)

  • No man can come to the Father except the words of God draw him (vs 44)
    • You aren’t getting to God Almighty your own way
    • It is the opposite of the cliche today that we are all going to Heaven just in our own way.
      • No, you and I don’t have a way to Heaven.  We wouldn’t even know how to get there.
      • I asked a guy one time, not being mean, but just to prove the point to draw me a map to heaven.  He said we were all going there just in our own way, so I said, Well, show me your way.
      • Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God (vs 46)
    • This is not Calvinism.  This is not God overpowering your will.  This is God providing the way.
      • Jesus Christ is answering their scoffing about him coming down from Heaven by telling them it has to happen this way.
      • You aren’t getting to God your own way that’s why Jesus Christ came down from heaven.
  • It is written in the prophets… quoting Isaiah
    • God Almighty puts the word out and whosoever will believes the scripture, comes to Jesus Christ
  • I am that bread of life (vs 48)

Spiritual Bread (vss 49-59)

    • your fathers did eat manna and are dead (vs 49)
    • not as your fathers did eat manna (vs 58)
    • flesh profiteth nothing, the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life (vs 63)
  • ASCENSION – The ascension answers their unbelief
    • What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? (vs 62)
    • If I physically leave, how are you physically going to eat my flesh?  The point is I’m not talking about physical cannibalism, I’m talking about the spirit (vs 63).
  • Spiritual bread is eternal life in the way that physical bread yields temporary life
    • PHYSICAL BREAD – You eat some bread, take in some calories that provide fuel for the body as it metabolizes and processes those calories to convert them to energy.
    • SPIRITUAL BREAD – Words of God are food for the soul, Jesus Christ is food for the soul just like that physical bread was food for your body that will perish, this spiritual bread is nourishment for your eternal soul
  • Application to Jesus Christ as the Bread of Life
    • You’ve got to internalize it just like eating physical food.  It does no good on the outside of the body.
    • And no one can eat for you.
