Truth (John #24)

Text: John 8:12-32

People think truth is up for grabs.  Arguing about truth being relative; “Your truth.”  Truth being objective and knowable.  Philosophising about truth and its nature.  Truth is God’s opinion.

Truth is Light (vss 12-20)

  • Truth is exposure.  It is revelation.
  • Truth is the light that will expose your sin
  • Frustrating to the Pharisees how Jesus exposed their hypocrisy with his piercing words that always got to the “truth” of the matter
  • 2 Timothy 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.  Truth is not a set of facts or information.
  • Walk in the light or get use to the dark.
  • Three vessels of light according to God
    • The Light shines in the Scriptures – Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
      • All creation is subject to adulteration, corruption and degeneration, but it is inconceivable to imagine dirty light. Thy word is pure
      • Proverbs 6:23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
    • The Light shined in the Savior – John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world…
      • Isaiah 9:2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.
      • Revelation 21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
      • Daniel 2:22 … and the light dwelleth with him.  Not a reflective light, but a light of his own – God is light – Light reflecting off an objects reveals that object.  The truth reflecting off an object reveals that object.
    • The Light shines in the Saints – Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world…
      • 2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
      • Psalms 97:11 Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.
      • 1 Thessalonians 5:5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
    • Jesus said the world hated him.  For everyone that doeth evil hateth the light.
  • Psalm 51:3 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts:
    • Reject the light because you want to hide their sin.  Neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
    • Doeth the truth, not do good – transparent
    • Defined belief for you in verse 21.  Cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
    • Mercy and truth show up together so often in the Bible
      • Some of you here today are choosing to hide your sin from God.  Truth is the thing you’re afraid of.
      • You may say you love the truth, but the reality is, in the areas of sin in your life, you don’t love the truth.  In fact, you want to be as far away from the truth as you can be.
      • Proverbs says by mercy and truth is sin purged
      • The Lord is rich in mercy to them who will come to the truth
      • It’s time to bring that sin to light.  Time to lay it open before the Lord.
    • Hebrews 4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
    • Truth as exposure is very helpful when you’re trying to see where you’re going.  John 8:12 …he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
  • Psalm 86:11 Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth:
  • Psalm 25:5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me

Truth is the Law (vss 21-27)

  • These days if you claim to have the truth or know the truth that is arrogant and ranks right up there with the unpardonable sin to American higher education
    • Isaiah said, Truth has fallen in the street
    • What passes as science today is not what passed as science 10 years ago.  You say, great, we are learning more and more.  Building upon previous knowledge and understanding is one thing, but when an education contradicts itself every few years, that is not learning.
    • In the 1970s the earth was headed for an ice age.  Not even a generation later what was being taught was that earth is headed for global warming.
    • Do you realize new discoveries never change the truth and the Bible doesn’t have to be rewritten ever.
  • Psalm 119:42 …thy law is the truth.
  • truth is the immoveable standard of God that defines his creatures
  • 2 Corinthians 13:8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.
  • Truth originates with the Creator
    • It comes down from above like a plumbline – revealed plain and clear
    • Truth is the immutable blueprint of laws and principles God has for his creation.
    • You cannot go outside of the truth.  You can reject it.  You can disobey it.  But you will never be outside of it.
    • Be not deceived, God is not mocked.
  • Because it is the immutable, eternal, indestructible blueprint of laws and principles God has for his creation, you can build on it.
    • You know how a sinner’s life goes from being filthy and unusable by God to fruitful and blessed by God?  With the truth.
    • Jesus tells them if they don’t believe the truth they are as good as dead and accountable for their own sins.  ye shall die in your sins.
    • The Lord Jesus Christ is the law of God for righteousness to all that believe.

Truth is Liberation  (vss 28-32)

  • John 8:36 if the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
    • Jesus Christ is the truth and makes men free from sin
    • Misquoted often as the truth shall set you free – dog at the end of a leash wears a path.  take his chain off and set him free, but if he does not know he is free, he has not been made free until that dog has KNOWLEDGE of the truth.  At that point, he is MADE free.
  • Knowledge of the truth is freeing
    • legalism or salvation based on your works is an imprisoning
    • the devil works by deception
    • You are going to believe something.  Be renewed in the spirit of your mind Paul says in Ephesians.
    • Lasting change begins with a true understanding.  It moves from the head, to the heart, to the hands.
    • Blindness by the devil or distraction.

Cost of Truth

  • John 8:31-32 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.
    • Buy the truth and sell it not Proverbs.  Truth has a price.
    • Sometimes the truth cost you your feelings when someone tells you the truth.
    • Sometimes the truth cost you your family.  Or the truth cost you friends.
  • Discipleship – If ye continue – Continuing in his word is the price of truth
    • Preachers take Luke 14:26, then step out in front of Jesus as they push Jesus into the background and say, Now this is what he means.  His mouth just got ahead of him, let me do a little damage control with an explanation of what he’s saying.
    • We want to soften the blow, but you realize Jesus doesn’t explain himself.
    • LISTEN CAREFULLY! – You and I underestimate what God is willing to let die in order to gain a soul
      • Our problem is not that we don’t understand the definition of hate, our problem is we’ve underestimated what God is willing to watch die in order to gain a soul for Jesus Christ.
      • We have put values on things that God didn’t put value on.  We have inflated the price and shown it to God expecting Him to reconsider.
  • If you’re not saved here today the truth will cost you you’re self righteousness.  You’ll have to be willing to be exposed by the light of God’s word
