Vision

In Isaiah 56 God’s watchmen aren’t watching anymore.  In verse 9 the call is made to all the beasts to come and devour because there is no longer anyone standing guard.  Vision is necessary for forward progress.  It is necessary to assess danger.  It is necessary to understand where we are.  And vision is necessary for life.

No Vision – His watchmen are blind:

Life without vision is blind to the people’s need

  • they are all ignorant
  • No vision means unaware of the things you and I are suppose to be aware of.
  • It means uninformed and/or unskilled
  • Ignorant of the need
  • Ignorant of the danger

Life without vision is a life void of preaching

  • they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark;

  • The job of the watchman was to alert the people of impending danger.  Dogs see danger and bark.
  • A Christian without vision loses their voice.  Loses the ability to minister the words of God.
  • Sometimes it’s ignorance – No knowledge of what to say and how to say it.  Study to shew thyself approved unto God.
  • Sometimes it’s fear.
  • Sometimes it’s indifference.

Life without vision is a lazy spiritual life

  • sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.
  • as far as the things of God are concerned, this is how a visionless people act.
  • We are busy people, but not necessarily busy with the things of God
  • You watch how you react to preaching and the words of God.  Your flesh will be wearied with it.  It will make you tired.  God calls it a spirit of slumber.

Life without vision is a selfish life

  • Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough,
  • not giving, rather taking, consuming, consuming
  • and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way,
  • One of the fundamental basic jobs of the shepherds is to watch out for the well being of the flock.
  • lost the giving spirit and now you just want to know what you can get out of it
  • every one for his gain,
  • what is the benefit to me?
  • completely unlike Jesus Christ
  • from his quarter.
  • no vision means you become an island.  I’ll do things my way
  • Not a part of what God is doing, in his own world.

Notice the result of blind watchmen in verse 9.

How do you get vision?

One or all of these things describe your life and vision.  So how do you get some clear vision going forward since you’ve lost it.  Go back to the beginning of the chapter, Isaiah 56:3-4.  Look at the verbs God uses:

Participate in your CALLING

  • The vocation and calling of the watchmen was to watch and warn.  Of what use are they anymore when instead of watching and warning the people, they are playing dice and arguing about who sleeps where and trying to figure out how to charge the people for their services.
  • KEEP – Keep the things holy that God said are holy.
  • Holy Calling – 2 Timothy 1:8-12 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.  For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
  • Holy Bible
    • More often than not in our lives Bible believing people are practical atheists.  For all the claims we make about the Bible, but then we don’t allow it to affect us.
      • We’d rather be right, than changed.
      • The Bible is not holy so you can argue the facts about it and win.  The Bible is holy in order to make a people for God holy.
    • Beeville needs Christians to minister the words of God.  Preach. Teach.
  • Personal holiness
    • Be ye holy as I am holy…
    • Some folks come to church and really have no idea what God is doing here or really even why they are here other than obligation.  No vision.  No understanding of the things of God.
  • Remember your vocation in Christ.  He has you here for the purpose that was determined in the Lord Jesus Christ.  That purpose is found in 2 Timothy 1 which we read – Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles

Make Godly CHOICES

  • Choose the things that please me… (vs 4)
  • Do what makes God happy
    • a question we rarely ask
  • Learn to say No
    • A lot of us are in the position we’re in because we didn’t say “No”
    • Make it quick! Don’t drag it out. Yea be yea, nay be nay.
    • When to say “No”
      • If this isn’t part of who I am in Christ, it isn’t for me
      • If this thing keeps me from my responsibilities as a Christian
      • If this thing doesn’t lead me to or keep me in the will of God
  • Choose Righteously
    • Right choice/Hard choice – The right choice is almost always the harder choice
    • Sin is enjoyable…. for a time, but back loaded with consequence
    • A guy that follows his feelings hasn’t displayed any character because he’s never made any tough decisions.
    • Ethics – You need to make some decisions before the time comes to make the decision.  That’s called “ethics”.
    • 1 Peter 3:17 – suffering happens to all.  Rather suffer for Christ than your own selfish and sinful desires.  1 Peter 4:15-17
  • Galatians 5:22-23 – every decision you make will come down to one of those 9 nine things

Learn COMMITMENT

  • Commit means I take the conditions off
    • You doing right is not predicated on someone else doing right.
    • God is not going to make a contract with you or bargain with you.  You would set parameters that were hurtful to yourself.
  • Commit means it will cost me something
    • It is the Lord’s work.  He wants some things accomplished.
    • commit to the things of God with your time, with your money, with your energy
  • verse 6 – join, serve, love
