What purpose did healing serve?

  • Everyone that was healed eventually died, so what was the point?  And if you believe it exists today, the body eventually dies, so what is the point?
  • To prove the identity of the Lord Jesus Christ when he was here
    • John 3:2
    • Mark 15:24 – ministry to Israel to identify Jesus Christ as the Son of God
  • The Son of God removes the curse
    • One of the curses placed on disobedient Israel was sickness and disease, Deuteronomy 28:60 (28:48 calls it signs and wonders)
    • The identity of the Messiah would be a healer – Psalms 103:3, Malachi 4:2, Exodus 15:26, Isaiah 35:5-6

How was healing administered?

  • Always successful
  • Matthew 8:16, 9:35, Luke 6:17-19, 12:15, Acts 5:16, 10:38
  • No miscues
    • Always immediate—Luke 8:47
    • Healings that go awry
    • The one healing that went wrong in the Bible—Mark 9:14-29—problem wasn’t lack of faith of the person being healed, but lack of prayer and fasting on the disciples part
    • If he’s a real healer then he has the problem
    • Jesus healed some people in spite of the lack of faith.
      • How about raising Lazarus from the dead?  How much faith did that take on the part of Lazarus?
      • All the children that were healed had no faith.  It was b/c of their parents that Jesus healed them.

Who had the gift of healing?

  • Jesus was able to heal and who did he pass this on to?
  • All Christians? A few Christians? A few elite?
  • The ONLY folks according to the Bible who had the gift of healing are named
    • Matthew 10:1-8 (called apostles 10:2)
    • They are called apostles and there were only 12 of them—Luke 22:14 & Revelation 21:14
    • Paul becomes an apostle—Romans 11:13, 1 Corinthians 15:9—and he is the only extra.
    • No one outside of these men are given the gift of healing in the Bible. 2 Corinthians 12:11-12 signs of an apostle
  • What about healers today?
    • Revelation 2:2, 2 Corinthians 11:13 false apostles exist
    • “healers” exist in many religion
    • 2 Corinthians 11:4 characteristics of false apostles
      • use subtle deceit relying on human emotion and feelings
      • preach Jesus, just not the right one
      • preach a gospel, just not the right one
    • Paul noted his persecution as something you would never find false apostles going through. They will be wealthy, popular and you won’t find them persecuted.
    • there is a spirit involved in their work, just not the Holy Spirit—this spirit speaks of the Holy Spirit a LOT, but John 16:13 says that’s the wrong spirit

How does the gift of healing exist today, or does it?

  • Since the particular gift of healing was a sign to the Jews, when God set the nation of Israel aside to go after Gentiles, what do you think happened to the gift of healing? Disappeared.
  • Paul had it, but lost it at the end of his ministry.  2 Timothy 4:20, 1 Timothy 5:23
  • So the end of Acts 28 is the end of the gift of healing.
  • God still heals through answered prayer, but the gift doesn’t exist today in any individual – Philippians 2:25-27, James 5:14-15
