Righteous vs Wicked (Proverbs #23)

Text: Proverbs 10:2, 3, 11, 16, 21, 24, 25, 28, 30, 32

Substance (vss 2-3, 25, 30)

  • There is no profit in wicked wealth
    • 1 Timothy 6:10 – anything for a buck
    • Here is a wealthy man who was a bootlegger.  Here is a wealthy man who is a drug lord.  He has reduced the value of his wealth to nothing because of how he got it.
    • Matthew 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
    • This man will die and go to hell and there aren’t enough zeros on his check to purchase his soul.
  • How you do something – what sort it is (1 Corinthians 3:13) – is important to God.
    • False notion that God doesn’t care… (where you go, if you go, how you worship, etc…)
    • That three word idea – “God doesn’t care” – is not anywhere in the Bible.
    • Actually, you can’t find anything that God doesn’t care about.  There is nothing in creation to which God says, “I never thought of that.  I don’t really have any opinion one way or another on it.”
  • Righteous won’t lose it and the wicked can’t keep it
  • Righteousness as a life giving substance
  • Wickedness pollutes and brings the curse of God on it
  • Righteousness is not only a foundation, but it is the foundation that you can put anything on top of (vss 25, 30)
    • wealth on top of it
    • families on top of it-
    • marriages on top of it
    • churches on top of it
    • nations on top of it
  • but you can’t build anything substantial on wickedness

Mouth (vs 11, 21, 32)

  • 1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. James 1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
  • Foolishness of preaching.  How shall they hear without a preacher?
  • God’s words likened to nourishment
    • Milk – 1 Peter 2:2
    • Honey – Psalm 119:103
    • Bread – Luke 4:4
    • Water – Ephesians 5:26
    • Meat – Hebrews 5:12-14
  • James 3:3-4 bits in horses’ mouths… and we turn about the whole body
    • Point your mouth in the right direction
    • Your mouth has much to do with where you are and why. Mouth is your direction.
    • Proverbs 15:1. Notice how encouraging words can help.  Or feisty words can ruin the spirit
    • Nothing happens until someone says something.  And God said… The most complete form of communication is words.  Damnation begins with words.  “Yea hath God said.”  Righteousness begins with words. “And he believed in the Lord; and he counted to him for righteousness.” The media uses words to control thought away from the Bible.
    • The direction for your mouth is found in Ephesians 4:29 – Edification to the hearer is the goal.
    • WAIT – Why Am I Talking?
  • Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue.  Hitler is credited with killing 6 million Jews.  Do you realize Hitler never personally killed any of them?  How did he do it?  He spoke.  But he could only kill the body.  His words had no power over the soul.
  • James 3:5-10 the tongue is a fire…and full of deadly poison
    • Understand the destructive nature of your tongue
    • Understanding the nature of your tongue gives you a true appraisal of it and will help you deal with your tongue the way you should.
    • When things get heated in a marriage or in a church or sometimes we like this aspect of our tongue.  After all it is what comes naturally.  Destroying each other with your mouth is not a solution.

 Priority (vss 16, 24, 28)

  • work of righteous to life
  • fruit, so there is fruit borne in a wicked man’s life, but it tendeth to sin.
    • money increases the greed and covetousness
    • take a lotto winner or a child who inherits a parent’s wealth
