Heresy of Hymenaeus

Text: 2 Timothy 2:17-18

Since we have been reading so much about the resurrection in John, I think we should familiarize ourselves with a particular heresy about the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the future resurrections to come.  The heresy of no resurrection and how that affects the behavior and the thinking of a Christian.  1 Timothy 1:20

  • Your view of the second coming of Jesus Christ will directly influence your behavior.
  • Christ carrying his cross to Golgatha bloodied and torn whom the Bible says, For the joy set before him.  But what if there was no joy set before him?  Nothing to look forward to.   Hymenaeus has stolen that from the church.

Dead Teaching

  • Hymenaeus was teaching that the resurrection was over.  2 Timothy 2:18 resurrection is passed
  • Denial of bodily resurrection
  • Amillennial teaching that there is no millennial kingdom of Jesus Christ denying Revelation 20:1-6
    • “it may be summed up in the idea that there will be no more millennium than there is now”
    • “A thousand years” is a figurative, or symbolical, description of the entire age of the new covenant. The number 1,000 is a symbolical number…
    • Amillennialists say the resurrection is only spiritual resurrection
    • Amillennialists say no promises to Israel legitimate
    • The church has replaced Israel and is currently reigning with Christ beginning at the cross
  • Dead teaching – 1 Corinthians 15:16-17… if the dead rise notye are yet in your sins
  • 1 Corinthians 15:12-18

Diseased Teaching

  • 2 Timothy 2:17 – eats as a canker
  • Spiritual disease
    • Hopelessness – Comfort withheld – 1 Thessalonians 4:14-18
    • Dirty spirituality – 1 John 3:3, hope to purify
  • Less spiritual sense than animals and creation (Rom.8:19-21)

Devilish Teaching

  • 1 Timothy 1:20 – delivered unto Satan for his blasphemy
  • Turns into the synagogue of Satan – Revelation 2:9
  • Millennium is a time when the Jewish nation is most powerful.  No such thing as millennium means someone took the place of the Jews

Destructive Teaching

  • 1 Timothy 1:20 – shipwrecked faith
    • Like what the iceberg was to the Titanic
  • 2 Timothy 2:16–shun profane babblings
