Inheritance (1 Corinthians #15)

Text: 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

In 1 Corinthians 6 Paul is starting to show those saved in the Corinthian congregation their new identity in Christ.  And along with that new identity in Christ came some benefits that would affect the Christian’s behavior while they were still alive.

The beginning of the chapter Paul showed them that Christians are and will be God’s jury.  These next few verses Paul will explain that Christians are joint-heirs with Jesus Christ in an inheritance.  Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.

In the case of a born again child of God, the spiritual inheritance is the kingdom of God.  The Bible defines the kingdom of God in Romans 14:17 as righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Sin prevents inheritance

  • Inheritance: An estate derived from an ancestor to an heir by succession or in course of law; or an estate which the law casts on a child or other person, as the representative of the deceased ancestor.
    • The reception of an estate by hereditary right, or the descent by which an estate or title is cast on the heir; as, the heir received the estate by inheritance.
    • The estate or possession which may descend to an heir, though it has not descended.
  • Now the document that states who the inheritance will be given to is called a last will and testament.
    • The document that states the child of God’s inheritance is also a testament: Hebrews 9:16-17.  The Bible is described in terms of inheritance – old testament, new testament.
  • The unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God
    • Righteous or unrighteous is a statement of what God says you are.  Righteousness is not based on what you do, it is based on who you believe.
      • Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
      • Do you believe Jesus Christ?  Do you believe the words of God?  That determines whether God calls you righteous or not.
    • The unrighteous is someone who doesn’t believe the words of God.  The unrighteous is someone who doesn’t believe Jesus Christ.  The unrighteous calls God a liar.
      • Anyone called unrighteous by God is then defined and judged by his works.
      • 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
  • Flesh and blood will not inherit the kingdom of God
    • 1 Corinthians 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption
    • Your flesh will never receive the peace of God.  It will never be able to sit down with the Lord and fellowship.  There will always be enmity between your flesh and the Holy Spirit of God.
    • Your flesh will never receive the joy of God.
    • Your flesh will never receive the righteousness of God.
    • Your flesh is sinful, guilty, and in a state of unbelief until it dies.
    • Galatians 5:19-21 …Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

All sinners are not sons, but all sons were sinners

  • There was a time when you were identified by God as a sinner.  That was before you trusted Jesus Christ as the payment for your sin.  Once Jesus Christ is allowed to take your sin upon himself, you are no longer identified as a sinner, but a son.
    • 1 Corinthians 6:11 such were some of you; but… – No longer identified by your works
    • Verse 11 says but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified…
    • You mean a group of misfits like the Corinthian church was headed for glory being clean, set apart, and righteous before God? Yes!
  • Faithful
    • Romans 4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
    • Galatians 3:18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
  • Children of God – Galatians 4:7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
  • Those who are in Jesus Christ
    • It is in Christ – Ephesians 1:10-11 …In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

You can begin to enjoy your inheritance now

  • Ephesians 1:12-14 …Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
  • Earnest like earnest money you would put down as a down payment to secure a home and make clear your intentions of purchasing the home.
  • Sometimes parents allow their children to participate in what will be theirs one day.  Running a family restaurant, helping on the ranch, building on the family property, etc
  • Practically speaking there is no joy or peace to a child of God yielding to sin.
