Holy Spirit Continues Christ’s Ministry (John #55)

Text: John 16:7-15

The subject for this morning’s message is the HOLY Spirit of God.  I emphasize the word holy because that is the defining characteristic of God’s spirit.  The Holy Spirit continues the work of the Lord Jesus Christ and that is made more clear in these verses than any place in the Bible.

Continued Companionship

  • What a blessing that God would send His Spirit!
    • Not an angel to be a companion.
    • Not a saint to be a companion.
    • The Lord sent part of Himself.
  • Disciples did not yet have the Holy Spirit of God.  Quite a change in their demeanor from their sadness just after the resurrection to their rejoicing in the book of Acts.
  • In the Old Testament He has a “come and go” ministry
    • Samson He came upon him and left and came back
    • Saul He came up him and then left
    • David prayed He not be taken away Psalm 51:11
  • After the resurrection of Jesus Christ His ministry changes to a permanent residence in believer’s only.
    • Ephesians 1:13-14 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
    • Now you and I have the Holy Spirit of God who knows us inside and out and can effectively work in us to do the will of God.
    • Romans 8:8-9
    • Romans 8:14-16 spiritually a child of God, soon to be physically 18-23

Continued Conviction

  • Sin because of unbelief
    • Unbelief is a turning away from the truth.  Unbelief is not a lack of knowledge it is running from the light in order to hide in the darkness.
    • Hebrews 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
    • Jesus Christ describes the very nature of sin itself as unbelief in Jesus Christ.
      • Identify what sin is.
      • 10 commandments – Good person test
      • Where sin is (your nature)
        • The law also awakens sin – sin, taking occasion by the law
        • An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin. Proverbs 21:4
        • The thought of foolishness is sin. Proverbs 24:9.
        • Whatsoever is not of faith is sin.  Romans 14:23.
        • Therefore, to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. James 4:17
        • For sin is the transgression of the law. 1 John 3:4
        • All unrighteousness is sin. 1 John 5:17
        • The sting of death is sin. 1 Corinthians 15:56
    • Particular sin of a sinner.
  • Righteousness because of Christ’s absence
    • Meaning of righteousness
    • Righteousness means conformity to the law of God.  When someone is declared righteous they have simply been declared completely in line with the law of God.
    • Jesus Christ is the righteousness of God.  Romans 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
    • Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
    • Righteousness credited to belief
      • Conformity to the law of God is not done by you conforming to the law of God.  You and I can’t.  We’ve already broken the law.
      • Jesus Christ is the righteousness of God for mankind.  Romans 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
      • Genesis 15:6.  This is when God told Abraham that his descendants would be as the stars of the sky and the sand of the sea.
      • Could it possibly be any easier?  God speaks and says if you believe what I say then I’ll credit that to you as righteousness.
    • Evidence of righteousness
      • Peculiar thing about righteousness is you have to admit wrong in order to be right.
    • Importance of righteousness
  • Judgment because the devil is judged
    • Explanation of judgment
      • The devil is the prince of the world.
      • Colossians 2:14-15
    • Significance of judgment
      • Hell is real because Heaven is real.  Heaven is heaven because there is no sin there.  People say a loving God wouldn’t send people to Hell.
    • Confidence of judgment
      • Jesus Christ died on a cross.  If you could earn your way to heaven then a very practical question is why did Jesus Christ die for you?
      • Secondly, He is coming back.  What will you do with a resurrected Jesus Christ?

Continued Communication

  • The heart of a teacher
    • Apt to teach
    • Revelation as equipping to do the work of God.
    • 2 Peter 1:21 & 2 Timothy 3:16.  Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
  • Anne Sullivan
    • As I began to teach her, I was beset by many difficulties. She wouldn’t yield a point without contesting it to the bitter end. I couldn’t coax her or compromise with her. To get her to do the simplest thing, such as combing her hair or washing her hands or buttoning her boots, it was necessary to use force, and, of course, a distressing scene followed…I saw clearly that it was useless to try to teach her language or anything else until she learned to obey me. I have thought about it a great deal, and the more I think, the more certain I am that obedience is the gateway through which knowledge, yes, and love, too, enter the mind of the child.
  • Timely truth.  Know what you need to know when you need to know it.
    • Guide is a gentle word.  Taking someone by the hand or simply leading.
    • Pictures of Anne Sullivan and Helen Keller with Helen’s hand in Anne Sullivan’s hand or Helen’s hand on Anne’s face.
    • People seldom see the halting and painful steps by which the most insignificant success is achieved.” Anne Sullivan
    • Notice where he leads; into all truth.
    • Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
    • Progressive learning of truth along the way
    • “In a previous letter I think I wrote you that “mug” and “milk” had given Helen more trouble than all the rest. She confused the nouns with the verb “drink.” She didn’t know the word for “drink,” but went through the pantomime of drinking whenever she spelled “mug” or “milk.” This morning, while she was washing, she wanted to know the name for “water.” When she wants to know the name of anything, she points to it and pats my hand. I spelled “w-a-t-e-r” and thought no more about it until after breakfast. Then it occurred to me that with the help of this new word I might succeed in straightening out the “milk-mug” difficulty. We went out to the pump-house, and I made Helen hold her mug under the spout while I pumped. As the cold water gushed forth, filling the mug, I spelled “w-a-t-e-r” in Helen’s free hand. The word coming so close upon the sensation of cold water rushing over her hand seemed to startle her. She dropped the mug and stood as one transfixed. A new light came into her face.”

Continued Concentration on Jesus Christ

  • You should notice that the work of the Holy Spirit of God is not to talk about Himself.  Assemblies of God and Pentecostal type denominations  focus much more on the Holy Spirit which is contrary to these words.  Meaning that is a different spirit talking.  The question is not do you have the Holy Spirit, but have you received Jesus Christ.  He will then give you His Holy Spirit.
  • This is His chief aim.  All spokes of the Holy Spirit’s ministry spring from this hub.
    • Everything we’ve talked about in this lesson spring from this focal point of the Jesus Christ.
      • Companion
      • Conviction
      • Communication
    • No comfort in the world like a clear view of Jesus Christ
      • Behold…
  • That which glorifies Jesus Christ is of the Holy Spirit, and that which does not glorify Jesus Christ is not.
  • Jesus Christ needs no new inventions for His glory.  No new machinery is needed.  You try to make Christianity work without obeying God, without making the Lord Jesus Christ the focal point of your life.

Conclusion:

  • Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
  • Are you led by the spirit of God?  If you’re here still in your sin, He is trying to show you your sin in light of God’s judgment not to make you made, but to lead you to a saving faith in Jesus Christ.
