Witness (John #53)

Text: John 15:18-27

A witness is simply someone who can testify of what they’ve experienced.

World’s Hatred

  • Common
    • Enmity between the world and Jesus Christ.
      • World – all that is in the world, lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, pride of life.  This is how the world is defined by God.  It is the appetites of the flesh that.  It is always in opposition to Jesus Christ.  What Jesus Christ did with the world and the lusts thereof is he put them on a cross.  The Lord Jesus Christ is not making an appeal to the flesh, he’s making His appeal to the soul.
      • The world can only hate Jesus Christ.  Wordly people, led by their lust, will only hate Jesus Christ.  Worldly Christians will hate Jesus Christ, by hating his people.
      • Here is a thought if you think you love Jesus Christ. Think in your mind of a brother or sister in Christ who you believe has done you wrong and you don’t care about at all.  That person represents to you how much you love Jesus Christ. 1 John 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
    • We don’t get a different godly life than Jesus Christ.  Christianity is not different now than it was then
    • Don’t take it personal.
  • Criminal
    • Persecution and charges brought against Christians.  Persecution in the Bible has to do with the laws of the land, the government, going after God’s people for the specific purpose of extinguishing righteousness.
    • Righteousness becomes a criminal matter: righteousness becomes illegal.
    • Political correctness is not new, but it is being used to bring in devilish religion.  The world cries “offense” at anything true then silences the truth by making it against the law.
    • Our response is often to appease the world in compromise that’s motivated by fear.  But the truth is suppose to have a voice in God’s people.
  • Causeless
    • Was Jesus mean to people?
    • Was he violent towards people?
    • Was he a liar who tricked people?
    • Did Jesus steal from people?
    • Did he gossip about people?

Work of Holiness

  • Caring
    • The world hated, but God so loved the world.  The world is always accusing God of hatred by accusing God’s people of hatred and intolerance.
  • Confronting
    • If I had not… If I had not… (vss 22, 24) There is the Lord’s initiative to begin the cleanup.
    • Am I your enemy because I tell you the truth?
    • Like a good doctor reveals the cancer, Jesus Christ removed the cloke for sin so it would be brought to light.
  • Curing
    • By mercy and truth iniquity is purged.

Wonderful Help

  • Comforter
    • Equipping for the work.  Jesus Christ supplying the need of the Christian by sending the Comforter.
    • The fellowship of the Comforter speaks volumes about the thorough work of the Lord Jesus Christ in a sinner’s life.
      • Work of the Holy Spirit in the OT verses in the NT
      • If you ever wanted to see the completeness, cleansing, the change that the work of the Lord Jesus Christ brought to sinners, it can be seen by comparing these two verses.
        • Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
        • John 14:15-16 If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
        • Before Jesus Christ there is a striving with man on behalf of God’s Holy Spirit, but after the Lord Jesus Christ the Holy Spirit comes to abide with God’s people forever.
      • Comfort is synonymous with hope. Colossians 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
      • The indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God in a believer is a gift from God and a clear display of the goodness of God on a sinner turned saint.
  • Curator of the truth
    • Originates scripture – 2 Peter 1:21 …but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
    • Interprets scripture – 1 Corinthians 2:12-13 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
    • Guides into all truth – John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
    • Where would you find truth if you didn’t have this book?
      • If you think you found an error, the problem is with you.  You don’t correct the truth, the truth is suppose to correct you.
      • All experiences and doctrines judged by the Bible – Galatians 1:6-9, 2 Peter 1:13-21
    • It is the words of Eternal Life
      • John 5:39-40
      • John 6:68
      • 1 Peter 1:23
      • James 1:18
  • Courage
    • When the Bible speaks of God’s people being filled it results in them speaking BOLDLY for Jesus Christ.
      • Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.  The power to do magic tricks! No.  The power to be my witnesses!
      • Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak…
      • Acts 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
    • Filled means Transformed –
      • Value in what you contain, not what you are.
      • Consider what you put in.  Music that enters in through your ears and affects your mind and heart.  The things you watch that enter in through your eyes into your mind and heart influence you.  They will make you or break you.
      • 2 Corinthians 4:7-10 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.  We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.
      • We aren’t looking for accommodating circumstances, we are looking for the filling of the Holy Spirit.  It’s not what around us, it is the Holy Spirit inside of us.
      • Filled means transformed!  You and I don’t respond the way the world responds to adversity.  If we do, there is a shortage of the Holy Spirit’s filling.
    • Filled Means Affected
      • To be effective you’ll have to be affected
      • What you’re filled with affects how you walk.
      • What you’re filled with affects how you talk.
    • Filled means increasing Joy
      • Acts 13:50-52 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. 51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.
