Spiritual Gifts Pt. 1 (1 Corinthians #31)

Text: 1 Corinthians 12:1-3

The most carnal church Paul dealt with was also the most interested in spiritual gifts and perhaps even the most gifted church.

Fruit of the Spirit are character issues that develop in you.  They are for your benefit and the Holy Spirit is allowed to bear fruit in you.  See Galatians 5.  The gifts of the Spirit are for the edification of the body.  They work outside of you to profit withal as Paul says.  The gifts of the Spirit are for power and ability.  They are how God uses you to help the body function.  Those gifts are also how you’re connected to the body.  We’ll say more about that in the future.

Clodhopping Corinthians

  • I would not have you ignorant, meaning, you are ignorant about spiritual gifts right now but I don’t want you to stay that way.
  • Ignorance is often closely related to arrogance.
    • Perhaps it’s a facade so no one will know they don’t know.
    • Perhaps it is willful ignorance that pats itself on the back for being so smart.
  • It’s possible to be saved and gifted by the Holy Spirit of God without really understanding what your doing with the gift.
  • Gifted does not necessarily mean moral.
    • Famous professional athletes that lack character.  Talented, but without character.
    • Corinthian church had some very high profile people in it.  Crispus was the chief ruler of the synagogue in Corinth.  Apollos was an extremely eloquent speaker.  Not saying these men were the one’s Paul was scolding and I’m very sure they weren’t.  But the Corinthian church had some high profile, gifted people in it.
  • Denominations that focus on spiritual gifts, just like the Corinthians are generally more concerned with the performance and the feeling than with character or the fruit of righteousness.

Carnal Culture

  • Notice he says you were Gentiles, but now you’re Christians.  The three groups of people God addresses in the Bible are Jews, Gentiles, and Christians.
  • You came from somewhere.  And the only reason you are where you are now is because the Holy Spirit of God has led you.  You forgot that you didn’t get here yourself.
  • Dumb idols set in contrast to a living, speaking God.  Dumb does not mean stupid, it means it can’t talk, can’t hear, simply has no power, no ability to do anything.
    • Paul is not superstitious.  Not afraid to call an idol dumb.
  • Culture is the visible patterns of people’s inward beliefs

Confessing Christ

  • The Holy Ghost speaks the truth.  Not that Jesus Christ is a lord, but Jesus Christ is THE Lord.
  • Certain denominations like Pentecostal, AG, Full Gospel that talk about receiving the Holy Ghost as evidenced by the speaking in tongues.  “The baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance.  Paul says, nonsense, it isn’t speaking in tongues that evidences the presence of the Holy Ghost, it is calling Jesus Christ the Lord.
  • 1 John 4:2-3 – Islamic antichrist spirit, cursing the Lord Jesus Christ
    • Sura 5:72-73, 5:75 “They do blaspheme who say: “God is Christ the son of Mary.” They do blaspheme who say: God is one of three in a trinity: for there is no God except one God Allah. If they do not desist from their word of blasphemy, verily a grievous penalty will befall the blasphemers among them. Christ the son of Mary was no more than a Messenger; many were the Messengers that passed away before him.”
    • Any Muslim who believes Christ is God has committed the unforgivable sin, that will send him to hell. Sura 43:59 states “Jesus was no more than a mortal whom Allah favored and made an example to the Israelites. They are unbelievers who say God is Messiah, Mary’s son.”
  • Roman Catholic curse in Council of Trent Canon 12 reads as follows: “If anyone says that justifying faith is nothing else than confidence in divine mercy, which remits sins for Christ’s sake, or that it is this confidence alone that justifies us, let him be anathema.”
  • Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
    • “The Mass is a sacrifice of the New Law in which Christ, through the ministry of the priest, offers himself to God in an unbloody manner under the appearances of bread and wine.”  In other words, Jesus Christ is condemned to be a sacrifice over and over and over again with no eternal power or effectiveness.  That sacrifice is vain according to Hebrews 10.  Hebrews 10:1-3 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year… Hebrews 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
