Hebrews Groundwork (Hebrews #1)

Ever overheard a conversation with bits and pieces of information that you took personally when you shouldn’t have?  You’ll learn as we study the book of Hebrews that you are privy to a conversation between the Holy Spirit and the Jews that you will be able to learn from, but you won’t be able to take it all personally because it’s not directed to you.

Back to the Beginning

  • Full circle
    • Since Acts 28:28, there is a clear moving of the Holy Spirit outward from Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the uttermost parts of the world.
      • Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
    • After the Jews reject the gospel given to them in Acts, the books if the Bible become directed to Gentiles.
      • Notice that the Holy Spirit puts the books in order of his own movement in history.  So the next book is Romans.
      • For 13 books of the New Testament you have doctrine given to Gentiles who were not given the words of God, who didn’t grow up in a culture that was laid out by God.  Gentiles who grew up as heathen, but trusted Christ and needed instruction in what that meant.
      • After Paul’s letter to Philemon something changes again.
    • The book of Hebrews is written to Hebrews.  The book of Hebrews is not written to Gentiles.  It is directed to the race of people God chose to manifest himself in, the Jews.  That will be important to know because many references will be made to Jewish culture and history as Paul shows how it all pointed to God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
      • God spake unto the fathers by the prophets… the fathers are Jewish, the prophets are Jewish and it was to the Jews
      • Paul answered the question in Romans of what advantage was there in being a Jew?  He said, Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.
      • So if something is going to learned about God, it’s going to be learned through a Jew.  John 4:22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
    • Acts is the transitional book of the Holy Spirit’s work moving outward from Jerusalem and Hebrews is the transitional book of the Holy Spirit returning to where he started.
  • Restarting the countdown
    • Time past spoke by the prophets to the fathers at sundry times and in divers ways
    • Now not only has the Holy Spirit of God come full circle but the divine schedule has been resumed.
      • Notice the last book to Gentiles is Philemon which is about Paul as a type of Jesus Christ requesting Philemon, who could be a type of God the Father, receiving what was an unprofitable servant back to himself.
      • Philemon 15-16 which looks like a type of the rapture.
    • These last days according to God’s clock that was revealed in Daniel 9:25-27
      • So you know the last days includes the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ just like it does in Daniel.  Daniel 9: 26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
      • Then the clock is paused for a time until it begins again with a 7 year peace treaty made between Israel and the Wicked one – antichrist.  Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

A Passionate Plea

  • Paul’s plea to his brethren
    • Hebrews 13:20-24 is Pauline.
    • Secondly, God was building on the apostles, so the book would have to be written by an apostle or someone working with an apostle like Luke.  Of the candidates for that, the only apostle who would’ve tied in all of Jewish culture and history to point to the Lord Jesus Christ was Paul who was a doctor of the law before his salvation.
  • Acts 20:22-24.  Paul had such a desire to go to his own people and preach, but the Lord didn’t want him doing that.  Paul even said he would rather go to hell than to watch his Jewish brothers and sisters go to hell.
    • The book of Hebrews is the explanation for why Paul was so set on going to the Jews.  He was a doctor of the law.  He knew the Old Testament backward and forward.  And when he got saved and plugged Jesus Christ into his understanding of the scriptures, they came alive like he had just found the key to the safe that held the treasures of all the world.
      • He applied Jesus Christ to Jewish culture and realized everything about their culture pointed to Jesus Christ.
      • He applied Jesus Christ to Jewish law and realized everything about the law pointed to Jesus Christ.
      • He applied Jesus Christ to prophecy and realized everything about prophecy pointed to Jesus Christ.
    • The answer was so simple and right in front of their face, I think it made Paul believe that he could really convince his Jewish brethren.  But he couldn’t.  And God wanted Paul to go to the Gentiles.  However, I think the Lord allowed Paul to put in writing what he wanted to tell his Jewish brethren hoping they would listen.
  • The purpose of Hebrews is to show how Jesus Christ fulfills the old covenant and establishes a new and better covenant that God would build a foundation on.  Hebrews 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

A Critical Concern

  • Because Hebrews is a book that shows the Holy Spirit has come full circle, and God has resumed his countdown for the end of the world and the establishment of His kingdom on earth, there is an urgency.
  • The Jews were given the first chance to receive the gospel and at this point, there will be no other opportunities.  Worse for God’s people to sin than for a sinner to sin.  Hebrews 6:4-6.
  • Second, time is short and the end of the world is near.  Hebrews 6:7-8.
  • Third, in the last days God begins actively working against those who don’t believe the truth.  He does that in a way he hasn’t done it before according to 2 Thessalonians 2:7-12.
