Text: Hebrews 2:11-18

Confidence to be a brother in flesh and blood (vss 11-13)

  • Unity
    • All of one is talking about companionship in humanity.  This is talking about the humanity of God.
    • God became a man in order to call men brethren; for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren.
    • He’s specifically talking about the nation of Israel here (notice 2:16) and Jesus Christ being a Jew.  Even more specifically sanctified Jews.
    • Most despised nation in the world is the nation God chose to identify with.  It is the nation he birthed and revealed himself in.
    • John 17:21-23
  • Unashamed
    • Moreover, it wasn’t something he was ashamed to do.
    • “They’re with me”
    • Jesus Christ talking to God the Father
      • declare thy name unto my brethren; not just declare thy name to these people.  This is preaching.
      • midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee; not just in the midst of these people will I sing
  • Jesus Christ is unashamed to associate with us, but we are ashamed to publicly associate with him.

Conquering flesh and blood with the cross (vss 14-15)

  • The victory of the cross is the putting down of flesh and blood
    • John 12:30-33 The cross would be the judgment of this world and the prince of this world.
    • The cross was defanging the serpent.
    • It was destruction of the flesh and completely disarming the enemy.  The flesh was is a friend of the devil.
      • Ephesians 2:2-3 So what was pleasurable to the flesh was contrary to God.  Not because God doesn’t want you to enjoy things.  Joy is part of the fruit of the spirit.  The problem is that flesh and blood is at enmity with God.
      • Romans 7:17-25
      • 1 Corinthians 15:50
      • Galatians 5:19-21
    • Remember the philosophy of the devil back in Job?  His philosophy is man will do anything to preserve his own flesh and blood, live in physical comfort and worldly prosperity.
      • Colossians 2:11-15 The cross was a public victory over the flesh and the devil’s philosophy of mankind – Adam.
      • So Jesus Christ took the weapon out of the devil’s hand and beat him with his own weapon so to speak.
      • Now, it didn’t appear to be a victory from a physical point of view.
    • Jesus would say, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
  • Flesh and blood in glory?
    • Now, here is a thought.  If flesh and blood are where corruption is located in this vile body, what changes in a glorified body?
      • The body looks similar, there is still flesh, but there is no blood.
      • Luke 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
      • Ephesians 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
      • Philippians 3:20-21

Compassion because of his experience in flesh and blood (vss 16-18)

  • Empathetic
    • Merciful
    • Faithful
  • Priesthood
    • Jesus Christ is a priest to handle things that pertain to God as a man.
