Riches of Christ (Ephesians #14)

Text: Ephesians 3:8

The world has riches and Christ has riches.  Hebrews says Moses esteemed the reproach of Christ to be greater riches than the treasures of Egypt.  So God has an economy.

Riches of Christ are unsearchable

  • Can’t find the end of his riches
    • Part of this is displayed in Paul who was the chief east of sinners and God’s goodness was greater than his wickedness.
    • You haven’t plumbed the depth of how low God’s riches would go.
    • You haven’t scaled the height that God’s riches would raise up a sinner.  1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
    • God’s riches reach to every nation, so the broad scope of God’s goodness has not been reached.
    • versus worldly riches which are ever diminishing
  • His riches show up in places you don’t expect

Riches of Christ are incorruptible

  • 1 Peter 1:4, 5:4
  • His riches have real value versus worldly riches that are deceitful
    • (1 Timothy 6:17, James 5:2, Revelation 3:17-18). God gives a warning in 1 Timothy 6:17 about trusting in money.  What a man has compared to others is in direct proportion to what he thinks of himself generally.  The goal of today’s study is to show the foolishness of trusting in money and the need to trust in God when it comes to money.
    • Corruptible riches because it’s value is diminishing
    • The nature of worldly wealth is just like anything else, it will diminish over time.
      • You can look at your checkbook at the end of the month and know that much about it.
      • I remember pumping gas for my dad in his F150 and handing the clerk a $20 and getting change for it.  Now, I can’t get a third of a tank on $20.
      • $1000 in your savings account today will pay for less a year from now.
      • Proverbs 23:5 – riches CERTAINLY make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
      • The only certainty about riches is that they will be gone.
      • Matthew 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal.
      • Wealth can change hands overnight
      • Ecclesiastes 6:1 – wealth doesn’t equal health.
      • Acts 8:18-25 – money has no power with God
    • Confidence not in riches
      • Matthew 6:24-34 – trusting God for provision
      • God uses money to prove you
      • Deuteronomy 8 – Testing Israel
      • Psalm 49 – where is your trust?
      • Proverbs 11:28 – trusting in riches will fail
      • Mark 10:21 – rich young ruler, sell what you have and give it to me? No.  Give it away and follow me.  The thing coming between you and me is covetousness.
      • Mark 12:41-44 – What you do with the money God’s given you is more important than how much you have.
    • Generosity versus greed
      • Psalms 37:21
      • Proverbs 15:27
    • Generosity is godly versus thinking gain is godly
      • 2 Corinthians 9:7
      • 1 Timothy 6:5

Currency in God’s economy

  • God said gold in heaven is pavement, not currency, so where is value in heaven?  The physical structures in heaven are as ornate and glorious as can be, but like Proverbs 17:1 says that a dry morsel and quietness therewith is better than a wealthy household full of strife.  So physical beauty is still limited to the relationships on the inside.
  • Souls 1 Thessalonians 2:19
    • 1 Peter 1:18-19 – blood of Jesus Christ value because of its power to redeem souls
    • 1 Peter 1:7 – trial of your faith
    • Matthew 16:26 In the future everyone will realize what was valuable to God was valuable to them, but it will be too late
  • Goodness Romans 2:4
  • Wisdom Romans 11:33, Proverbs 3:15, 8:11
  • Knowledge Romans 11:33, Proverbs 20:15
  • Forgiveness Ephesians 1:7
  • Kindness Ephesians 2:7
  • Psalms 19:9-10 – judgment of the the Lord
  • Proverbs 22:1 – reputation
  • Proverbs 31:10 – virtuous woman

Labor in God’s economy

  • You work for a paycheck.
  • In God’s economy He pays fair wages to his servants
    • Philippians 4:19
    • Colossians 1:27-29
