Text: Ephesians 3:8-12

The wisdom of God is pit against the wisdom of the world, which is ultimately the devil’s wisdom.  The two are in direct conflict.  God’s wisdom is superior and eternal, while the devil’s wisdom is inferior and temporary.  God’s wisdom is life while the devil’s wisdom is death.  God’s wisdom leads to redemption while the devil’s wisdom leads to damnation.

In this study you’ll learn three things about God’s wisdom.  First of all you’ll see how God’s wisdom is spread and propagated.  Second, you’ll see the display of God’s wisdom in a universal forum.  Third, you’ll see the application of God’s wisdom to all who will believe.

Preaching is the vehicle of God’s wisdom

  • Christianity is not an ancestral religion, nor is it promoted by the edge of the sword, nor do you buy your way into it.
  • According to the Quran, the truth is spread by force.
    • Seize them and slay them wherever you find them: and in any case take no friends or helpers from their ranks.  Sura 4:89
    • I will instill terror into the hearts of unbelievers, smite ye above their necks and smite all their fingertips of them.  It is not you who slew them; it was Allah.  Sura 8:13-17
  • Truth is not propagated by the sword. People are not forced into belief.  Put it this way, God does not accept forced belief.  He responds to willingness.
  • 1 Corinthians 1:21 – it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
  • Titus 1:3 – God manifested his word through preaching
  • Acts 8:30-35.  Needed a man to guide him.  Preaching done one on one.
  • Preaching is fishing.
  • Belief is intentional.  People are not passive pawns in the redemptive work of God. You may find yourself unconsciously saying, “God’s will is going to be done.”  In most cases, it won’t be done.  People are not passive pawns.  Jude 21-23 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.  And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
  • John writes his gospel for the express purpose.  John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
  • There is no substitute for preaching Jesus Christ.  1 Corinthians 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
  • People will not believe if they don’t hear, that is the truth.
  • How shall they hear without a preacher?  Answer is they won’t.
  • Who is a preacher?  Someone sent by God (that’s you if you’re saved) to communicate the wisdom of God to lost souls.

The universal display of God’s wisdom

  • Gentiles would be in on it (vs 8)
  • All men would be in on it (vs 9)
  • Principalities in heavenly places (vs 10)
  • 1 Peter 1:12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
    • Controversy of wisdom between God and the devil.  Much of it seen in Job.  And in the life of Jesus Christ.  Devil’s philosophy is carnal.  His wisdom is earthly, sensual, and devilish. Those are the same thoughts of a fallen man.  (James 3:17)
    • Colossians 2:13-14
  • Since the beginning of the world
  • It was an eternal purpose
  • With Israel he is restoring the earth, with the body of Christ, he is restoring the heavenlies
    • He tells Israel thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.  He doesn’t tell them to set their affection on things above.  He only tells you and I that.
      • 1 Corinthians 15:49
      • Ephesians 2:6
      • 2 Timothy 4:18
    • Romans 11:15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?

Practical application of God’s wisdom

  • Wisdom has value when it can be applied.  It has no value as information only.
  • To contrast God’s wisdom in the person of Jesus Christ with the devil’s wisdom you have confidence versus fear.
  • Access versus trespassing.
  • Jesus Christ is the name was given by God, thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.
  • The world knows his name as a swear word because you swear by the higher, not by the lower.  Hebrews 6:16 For men verily swear by the greater
  • Neither is there salvation in other, for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.
  • Wherefore God hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
  • Lord, I don’t bring anything to the table here.  There is no reason for you to bless me or answer this prayer or even hear me, but Lord for THY SAKE.  But Lord, IN JESUS NAME, please
    • In Jesus name – seen as an incantation “in Jesus name” but it is not a magic spell that summons God
    • It means for his sake.  Lord I don’t have a good reason to expect an answer to this, but to say that it affects your name and things that are associated with you.
  • In my name
    • John 14:13-14
  • Opportunity because of who Jesus Christ is.  Come in Jesus name.  That’s a comfort that it doesn’t depend on you or me.
  • The name Jesus Christ is the name that people have trouble with
