Text: Hebrews 4:12

My Bible is alive

  • Quick as in alive.  Just like the living part of your fingernail bed is the quick, and it hurts if you clip your nail past the quick.
  • John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life
  • Life in a seed
  • Luke 8:11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
    • We know that a seed is life.
    • The seed contains the DNA code to reproduce the original tree, or flower or shrub.
    • The word of God is as a seed, within it is the code that can reproduce the original in you. Planted in the fertile soil of your heart, it will reproduce the nature of Christ in you.
    • The Sequoia tree is enormous when full grown. They can have branches up to 8 feet in diameter.  Their bark can grow up to 3 feet thick.  Between 20-35 ft in diameter.  Generally as tall as a 26 story building.  As tall as the towers on Shoreline in Corpus Christi.  But the seed of a Sequoia is so small.  You could fit about 8 Sequoia seeds on a dime.
    • The difference between the seed and the tree is life.  It’s not a mechanical process that turns a seed into a tree.  It’s not a financial process.  It’s not an electrical process.  And it’s not even a chemical process.  It is life that God put into the seed to grow, to eat, to give, to drink, etc.
    • The difference between a lost sinner and a saved soul is life.  The difference between a baby Christian and aged Christian is life.  Not time.  Life.
    • John 6:68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
  • Lively refreshing
    • Not only are they the words of eternal life, but they bring life to those who will obey them.
    • Like a blood transfusion that puts life back into a patient.
    • Lethal Triad in blood loss where life is leaving the body causing the body to go into shock and destroy itself.  On Call in Hell by Richard Jadick p. 223
    • Psalm 119:50 This is my comfort in my affliction: for your word has made me alive.  It is like putting blood back into the body.

My Bible is powerful

  • I think of the creative power of the word of God.
  • Psalm 33:6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
  • And God said, “Let there be light and there was light.”
  • I think of it’s effect on the believer
    • 1 Thessalonians 2:13 For this cause also we thank God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
    • What about the creative power of God’s word for a soul?  2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
    • Psalm 107:20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
    • But there was no effect where no one cared what Jesus said in Mark 6:4-5.

My Bible is sharp

  • The purpose of a blade is to make a division.
  • Ephesians 6:17 And take … the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
  • Paul will describe three divisions here.  A spiritual division, a physical division, and a heart division.
  • First the spiritual division.  Man is a threefold being, body, soul, and spirit.
    • We are so integrated that it is impossible to divide the parts naturally or visibly.  We are so integrated that:
      • Whatever affects you physically can also affect you spiritually.  Spirit is affected: A person with a prolonged painful illness often becomes depressed.  Soul is affected: They may begin to question if God loves them.
      • Whatever affects you spiritually will affect you physically.  A merry heart doeth good as a medicine but a broken spirit drieth the bones.  I have seen the countenance of people so changed after coming to Jesus Christ that I did not recognize them.
    • There is such an integration of the soul and spirit of man that many deny the existence of the spirit, but declare that the soul and spirit are synonymous.
      • Many people have great emotional experiences that they think are spiritual experiences.
      • They are not able to discern the difference between the soul and the spirit.
      • The soul is the man.  You’re told to control your spirit in Proverbs.
  • Second is a physical division.
    • This one requires a blade to separate the two.
    • Another way of looking at it is that God created joints and marrow and can take them apart with his voice.
    • Another possibility is that the joints are the movement and the marrow is the life.  Movement looks like life, but you can have life without movement and movement without life, though they appear similar.
  • Third is a heart division
    • Discerner of the thoughts and the intents of the heart
    • Intent comes from you, but thoughts come from the outside in.
    • Intention is what you’ve devised in your heart to do.  It is the direction and goal of your own heart.
      • Here is a thought: You should rob a bank.
      • Here is an intent: I’m going to rob a bank.
      • A law knows the intents of the heart after the act has been committed.  However, the word of God identifies the intents of the heart before the act has been committed.
    • Sometimes it is difficult to know the motives of why I do things.  Difficult because the Bible says that the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.
      • Psalm 139-23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
      • God tries the heart to reveal motives and correct them.
      • 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
