Text: 1 Thessalonians 1:10

  • Don’t trade God’s timing for your deadline.
  • Warren Buffet said, “The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient.”
  • Why is patience a virtue?  Why isn’t “Hurry Up!” a virtue?
  • Prayer: Lord help me with patience.  Not the opportunities to be patient.  I’ve had plenty of those.  Just patience itself.
  • Patience is what you have when there are too many witnesses.
  • I’m sure whatever you have to say can wait until you’re smarter.
  • Prayer:  Lord, give me patience because if you give me strength I’m going to also need bail money.
  • Have patience.  Only weeds grow quickly.

Waiting is an activity

  • It takes patience to learn patience.
  • “Waiting for God is not laziness. Waiting for God is not going to sleep. Waiting for God is not the abandonment of effort. Waiting for God means, first, activity under command; second, readiness for any new command that may come; third, the ability to do nothing until the command is given.”—G. Campbell Morgan
  • Waiting like waiting tables.  It is an active waiting.
    • If you’re really waiting on a table, you do everything you can to make their experience pleasant.  Orders taken timely.  Drinks stay full.
    • It can be frustrating when someone at a different table starts making demands on you and takes you away from your customers.
  • If you’re waiting on someone important to show up, you’ll be preparing for them to show up.
    • Clean house
      • When company is coming over you get out the vacuum, swiffer, you set out the plates, etc.  In other words, you prepare by cleaning and sanctifying your place.
      • 1 John 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
    • Watch out for areas that will be displeasing to the Lord
      • Watches for his coming like you would look through the windows to see if he’s here yet.
      • Also looks for areas that need to be cleaned up.  Watches in all things.
      • Someone who truly loves the appearing of Jesus Christ is constantly watching for areas that the Lord will be displeased with if he comes.
      • Concerns themselves with the task at hand
    • Corrals as many guests as he can
      • Do the work of an evangelist.

Anticipating the happiest reunion ever

  • Morgan Hill story: (http://www.kshb.com/news/woman-thrown-away-and-left-to-die-as-a-baby-meets-her-rescuers-for-the-first-time?page=2)
  • Soldier Surprises Daughter – 11-year-old Karleigh knew her dad’s homecoming, but she had know idea about when it would happen.  Sgt. Mike Clark has been serving in Iraq and Kuwait for nine months.  Clark surprises his daughter during her softball game.  She comes up to bat.  The umpire stops the game and Dad walks out from behind the dugout.  Karleigh drops her bat and runs to wrap her arms around her Dad.  You know nothing else matters at that time.  The game doesn’t matter.  The score doesn’t matter.  The only thing that matters is reunion.
  • Romans 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
  • The Good Samaritan and the man who was helped by him.

Listen to the warning because the deadline is coming soon

  • For others, there is no happy reunion.
    • There is wrath to come…
    • When you see the Lord for the first time you’ll be ashamed, scared to death, because the one who died for your sins and rose again, who you neglected and ignored has now come to pour out his wrath on the disobedient world which you are a part of.
  • People are willing to believe in an eternal reward, but eternal judgment doesn’t get the same consideration.
  • All will be judged including you
    • Dead, small and great….sea gave the dead…death and hell delivered up the dead…  All the wicked and unrighteous are dead at this point.  The souls of those who refused to fear God and had no payment for their sin are now dealing with a dirty soul.
    • The devil is cast in.  The devil is not in hell right now (1 Peter 5:8).
    • No respect of persons – small and great
    • No place hidden – sea, death and hell
  • The procedure of the judgment
    • Books opened…. What books?
  • The word of God – John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
    • So the judgment is already laid out.  This called a warning.
    • What’s missing is any opportunity to plead your case.  Why?  Because what you did with your life is your argument.
    • Judged according to works… Just like in a court today, you are judged for your part in a crime committed
  • Romans 2:16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
  • The punishment of the judgment
  • Lake of fire…
  • You’ve seen a type of it on this earth when a volcano erupts or flows.  God made that and you can’t survive it, yet God made it.
  • How about the Sun?  God made the sun.  God is purer than the sun.  He created it, but you can’t look at it for more than five seconds without burning your own eyes
  • This resurrection of Jesus Christ proved several things:
  • There is no such thing as “annihilation.”
  • There is no such thing as purgatory.
  • There is no such thing as reincarnation.
  • The fire is literal and not just separation from God – “and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever” (Revelation 20:10,  14:10,11, Mark 9:43, 44, 45 ,46, 48).
  • In Luke 16 a fellow in hell didn’t want his brothers to go to Hell.  Did you realize that people in Hell don’t want you to go to Hell?  God doesn’t want you to go to Hell.  Christians who love you don’t want you to go to Hell.  The only person that wants you in Hell is the devil and you.
  • The purpose is to fully remove sin and death because there is no place for them in the Lord’s new and perfect world.
