Text: 1 Corinthians 15:3-6

Substitutionary death of Jesus Christ

  • …for our sins…
  • Why do I need a substitute?  What danger was I in?
  • Sin
    • What sin is.  Sin leads to the death of the body and the second death of the soul in judgment.
    • Sin runs through your veins.  Corrupt body.  Vile body.  Stuck trying to satisfy the appetites of your flesh.
    • Nature is sin.
    • Body reveals
    • Good person?
    • If you can earn it, why is he hanging on a cross there?
  • Conquering flesh and blood with the cross
    • Tempted like in all points as you are.  Tempted worse than you are.  Yet he never sinned.  He never yielded to the demands of the flesh.
    • Now Jesus Christ really had every right to say, I don’t deserve this.
      • Not only did he have the right, he had the power to call down an angelic host to completely obliterate humanity, or Rome, or whoever he saw fit.
      • 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
      • Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
    • The victory of the cross is the putting down of flesh and blood
  • John 12:31 …Now is the judgment of this world…now is the prince of this world cast out…
    • The cross was defanging the serpent.
    • It was destruction of the flesh and completely disarming the enemy.  The flesh is the friend of the devil.
      • Ephesians 2:2-3 So what was pleasurable to the flesh was contrary to God.  Not because God doesn’t want you to enjoy things.  Joy is part of the fruit of the spirit.  The problem is that flesh and blood is at enmity with God.
      • 1 Corinthians 15:50
      • Galatians 5:19-21
    • Remember the philosophy of the devil back in Job?  His philosophy is man will do anything to preserve his own flesh and blood, live in physical comfort and worldly prosperity.
      • Colossians 2:11-15 The cross was a public victory over the flesh and the devil’s philosophy of mankind – Adam.
      • Now, it didn’t appear to be a victory from a physical point of view.
    • Jesus would say, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Sure burial of Jesus Christ

  • Proof of his death was his burial.
  • Protected by armed guards
  • Power of a sinless life
    • Incorruptible – Acts 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

Spirit raised Jesus Christ from the dead

  • It wasn’t the flesh that raised itself up.  The Lord Jesus Christ had put down the flesh.  He had subdued it.
  • Proof of the resurrection
    • Gospel of the resurrection
    • Believers stand in faith on it
    • Believers are saved by receiving the gospel
    • Scriptures testified to to the resurrection
    • Eyewitness accounts of the resurrection
      • Peter
      • Disciples
      • More than 500 eyewitnesses
      • James (the Lord’s half brother)
      • All the apostles
      • Paul
    • Paul’s life turned around because of the resurrection
      • He becomes a minister of something he sought to destroy.
      • The diversity of testimonies, the order of events all testify of the resurrection.
      • Point is that we are all here because of a risen savior, not a dead one.
    • Proposition of no resurrection
      • Some were saying no resurrection.  Here is an example.  2 Timothy 2:16-18 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; 18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.
      • Canker and cancer are similar words.  A Christianity without a resurrection is like a cancer ridden body.
      • If no resurrection, everything we’re doing is a waste of time.  Faith is worthless.
      • If no resurrection, we are in our sin.
      • If no resurrection, all men die in their sin.  Everyone you love died in their sin.
    • Prospect of the resurrection
      • But because the resurrection is no fairy tale.  The empty tomb is empty unlike any other religious leader’s tomb.
      • Because he lives, we live.
    • Picture of the resurrection
      • Seed that is planted
    • Power of the resurrection
      • It satisfies the need
      • It defeats death and the grave
      • It sets things in the right perspective and renders the flesh helpless against a spiritual look towards the resurrection

Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
