Psychological Warfare (Ephesians #24)

Text: Ephesians 4:20-24

You’re never told to be renewed in your physical body, but the Lord did say be renewed in the spirit of your mind.

Just as the Lord Jesus Christ created a the pattern for a new incorruptible body by living a sinless holy life, he also created a new mind and new thoughts for eternal life in a cursed world.  The divine way of thinking that whoever would believe would have access to.  It was created in true holiness and righteousness.  Jesus Christ had a mind to fight while maintaining a sweet spirit about him.

The battle in the mind (Romans 7:20-25)

Romans 7:20 – You do something then beat yourself up for doing it.

Romans 7:21 a LAW.  People say you get down on your knees and the devil begins to shake.  HOGWASH! The devil begins to really work you over.  How about the Holy Spirit prompts you to discipline your disobedient child? The devil begins to work you over.  You don’t need to do that.  He/She is so sweet.  How can you hurt your own child?  It’s going to be a big ordeal.  You need to just let it go.  How about when you’re prompted to be a witness?  The devil goes to work that you don’t know enough, you’re not ready for this.  There’ll be other opportunities.  Just let this go.  How about when you could read your Bible or pray for some folks, but instead you’re desire to be entertained is so strong that you turn on the TV and veg out instead.

Romans 7:22- Why do you still do wrong?  You have in you a desire for the things of God.  You have in you a desire for your children to know the things of God.  You have an appetite for the things of God.  So what else is at work to make you ignore all those things and continue to live in sin?  Continue to ignore those good desires in exchange for entertainment, comfort, pleasure, and easiness.

Romans 7:23 …warring against the law of my mind… While I know what’s right, there is always an easy way out.  With every chance to do right comes a temptation to comfort my flesh.  With every opportunity to be fed or endure preaching (however you look at it), there is a basketball game, there is a football game, there is a baseball game.  Now, we don’t see that as warfare.  But every opposition to doing right is met with a more comfortable, entertaining, pleasant temptation to ignore the fight.

Romans 7:25 – Paul was able to think thoughts outside of his flesh.  And he was able to recognize thoughts of the enemy (world, flesh, and devil).  So he would say our weapons are not carnal, take each thought captive and bring it to obedience to Christ.  In Colossians he would say the circumcision of the flesh made without hands in the putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision  of Christ.  Think outside the box.  That’s called revelation.  Revelation based on the resurrection.  The body can kick and scream all it wants to but it is unnecessary, irrelevant, and always at odds with what God is doing.

Spiritually minded (Romans 8:6)

Renew your mind (Romans 12:3) is the transformation that leads to knowing and doing the will of God.  Renew: Making new again; repairing; re-establishing; reviving; renovating.
