Lasting Investments (1 Thessalonians #11)

Text: 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20

Profit of a good investment

  • For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing?
  • Hope
    • Hope of glory (not wishful thinking, but looking forward to reunion)
    • Hope of full reconciliation
  • Joy
    • Joy of friendship in the Lord
      • Comforted together Romans 1:12
      • Planted together Romans 6:5
      • Glorified together Romans 8:17
      • Strive together Romans 15:30
      • Prayed together
      • Suffered together
      • Gathered together
      • Edifyed together
      • First of all you’ve got to be in the Lord – saved.  Second, you’ve got to be together.
    • Joy of faithful service together
      • Divided labor
      • Many hands make light work
      • What we do, we do together
      • Some of you need to get more involved.  Some folks care.
      • Moody said, I’d rather put 10 men to work than do the work of 10 men.
    • Joy of fellowship in the spirit of unity
  • Crown
    • Crown for the wise soul winner
      • Winning souls is the wisdom of a king when the Lord Jesus Christ returns.
      • Many things that don’t look like nobility now will appear as nobility when the Lord Jesus Christ returns.
    • Multiplied Reward
      • Many saints have a part in the salvation of a soul
      • Team celebration

Parameters of a good investment

  • Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ?
    • The basic parameter of a good investment is future value.  Will this thing have greater value in the future than it does now?
    • This question needs to be asked because your current investment may not be worth anything when the Lord returns.
  • Proverbs 11:7 When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.
  • Instead of saying the wicked man’s thoughts are always on murder, fornication, cheating lying, rather there is one overarching theme of all a wicked man’s thoughts and that is that they will die with him—they are worthless.
    • He just doesn’t think of things beyond his physical world.  Hopes are all tied to this world.
    • There is a danger in becoming a do-gooder connected to causes that will never be solved before the Lord Jesus Christ comes back.  There is a danger in you finding righteousness in your own morality or benevolence, and never make an eternal impact on anyone’s life.  You never tell them the truth.
    • No thoughts of eternity
    • 100% sure tract always catches folks off guard
    • Will not accept the testimony of Jesus Christ who has been there and back
    • His goals will die with him
    • How much of what your heart desires would carry with you?

People are a good investment

  • For ye are our glory and joy.
  • Blessing of people.  While people are very disappointing, grieving, burdening, manipulating, … have we gone far enough?  While people are all those things, people are also the greatest joy, the best friends, the most encouraging, the source of hope, and yield the greatest influence on your life.  We feed off each other.  Live isolated, die isolated.
  • I didn’t get into the ministry because of ambition.  I didn’t get into the ministry because I needed a career.  Got into ministry because I love the Lord.  Second, because I love the Lord, I love the people God loves.
  • The Lord Jesus Christ is coming back and people are his investment.
    • God has given you an opportunity to lay up treasures in Heaven
    • 2 Timothy 1:10-12 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.  For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
