Presumption (Esther #23)

Text: Esther 7:5-6

Blindness of presumption

  • The king will find the presumptuous heart
  • Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart… (vs 5)
  • Presumption is fortified by imaginary strength.
  • A sin that is committed willfully against manifest light and knowledge.  This is the contradiction of presumption, it is voluntary blindness.

Belligerency of presumption

  • The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman. (vs 6)
  • Adversarial
  • Enemy of God’s people
    • This sin is not an outburst, it is deliberated.
    • It is a sin by design.
  • Wicked

Burden of presumption

  • Proverbs 10:24 The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him.  The thing the wicked has hid in his heart will come to light.
  • This is the moment when Haman sees himself as he really is. He sees that the problem distressing him is not in others, but in him.  He sees that his evil attitude which he treated like a friend, defending, protecting, building little fences about, making excuses for, now sees in its true light.  You discover that it is not others’ thoughtlessness that is the problem — it is your selfishness.
  • Haman’s secret personally affects the king
    • Haman’s presumption indicted the king’s wife, which he was unaware of.
    • Esther 2:10 Mordecai told Esther not to reveal her heritage.
  • Be sure you sin will find you out
  • Romans 2:16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
