Second Coming of Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians #16)

Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

Christian’s separation (vss 1-4)

  • Separated by what you know
  • …ye have no need that I write unto you…
    • Paul said the Thessalonians knew the times and seasons.  Now, it’s not that this information is only available to some people, it’s simply that most folks are not interested in knowing anything about Jesus Christ and His plans.
    • …know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh…
    • For when they shall say, Peace and safety…
    • Jesus Christ is going to return to this earth in judgment.  The world does not believe that.  The world does not believe there will ever be a judgment of their sin.  The world does not think God has any role to play right now, nor will He ever have any part in what’s going on if He even exists.
  • When they knew God, they glorified him not as God, but became vain in their imaginations and their foolish heart was darkened.
    • God is light.  The nature of light is to reveal, enlighten, provide opportunity.  Everywhere you see darkness in the Bible it is the result of what someone did with the light.
    • Consequences of ignoring God were Deuteronomy 28:29 And thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways: and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled evermore, and no man shall save thee.
    • There are people who sit around the coffee table, people who don’t do bad things, who bemoan how crazy things are in some circles.  Good, what you would call, conservative people.  These folks have the solutions and probably believe they are the light of the world; if people would just listen to them.  These same folks can’t find time in their week to give even a nod to God.
    • Oblivious world – The people we’re talking to about God have a football god, boat god, truck god, American idol god, movie star god and they have no clue who God is.  And if you ever open a Bible in front of them, they have no idea what relevance this book has to their life whatsoever.  This book means less to them than videos on Youtube.  It means less to them than pictures on Instagram.  This book means less to them than Likes on Facebook.
    • There is leadership in our community that believe this community needs their leadership.  This same leadership has no idea why God should be more important in their lives than 30 minutes on Sunday.
  • …but ye are not in darkness…
    • Some of you don’t know what Jesus Christ has to do with your emotional stability.
    • Some of you don’t know what Jesus Christ has to do with your mental health.
    • Some of you don’t know what Jesus Christ has to do with your education.
    • Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto thine own understanding.
    • Some of you don’t know what Jesus Christ has to do with your children’s behavior.
    • Some of you don’t know what Jesus Christ has to do with your financial issues.
    • Some of you don’t know what Jesus Christ has to do with your job.
    • Some of you don’t know what Jesus Christ has to do with your life outside of 45 minutes on Sunday morning.
    • And it is you, who have no idea why Jesus Christ is important in this life, trying to explain to people why Jesus Christ should be important to them.
    • Look, if all we’re doing is taking a handful of people door knocking every other week for an hour and a half and periodically appearing in parades with signs, we aren’t even scratching the surface of what needs to be done.
    • The problem is we are acting and thinking like people groping around in the darkness.

Christian’s sanity (vss 5-8)

  • The way people behave at night versus the way people behave during the day.
    • Sleep – fall into temptation
    • Drunkenness – make a mess.  Wounds without cause.
  • Breastplate of faith and love.  This protects your heart.
    • Faith protects the heart.  You lost sight of God and you became attracted to something else.  Your heart moved.  Temptation is an attempt to capture your heart away from Jesus Christ.
    • Love protects the heart.
  • For a helmet the hope of salvation – If you want your mind guarded, this is the mentality you need to have, a view toward the Second Coming.
  • Let us who are of the day be sober…

Christian’s stand (vss 9-11)

  • My hope is in the promise of God.  That’s what gets a Christian through this life.
  • Christian’s ultimately live on the promises of God.
    • Sometimes there is no explanation.
    • Sometimes God does not change the circumstances.
    • But I don’t live on either of those things.
  • Comfort yourselves together.
  • Edify one another.
