Victory in Jesus (Hebrews #24)

Text: Hebrews 10:1-14

Failures of the sacrificial system (vss 1-7)

  • The sacrificial system was the shadow, not the very image
    • Image that cast the shadow was the image of God who is Jesus Christ.
    • Hebrews 1:3 …the express image of his person…
    • That law having a shadow of good things to come
      • God showed his intentions to take away sins.
      • God said He would accept the blood of bulls and goats for a time until He could find a man who would do His will.
      • As opposed to the shadow of death
  • Repetition means vanity (vss 1-3)
    • Clean dishes, grab a plate in the “clean” rack and it has grease on it.  Get the kids to “wash” it again because it’s still not clean.  Once it’s clean, it doesn’t need to be washed again.
    • Conscience purged would mean no more remembrance of sins.  So a conscience is a reminder of sin.
    • Preaching is stirring something up that is inside you.  When people are far from God, it’s because they’ve rejected light given by God.  Romans 1:18-21 explains this process of departure from God.  And without God things simply deteriorate to the basest of behavior, conversation, etc.
    • Illustration: Rig conversations when the preacher is around versus when he’s not.
  • Law could not produce victory over sin (vss 4-7)
    • God does not create victory out of thin air.  God can do anything you say?  Verse 4 says it is not possible, so when God is looking for victory over sin, He needs someone to fight the battle against sin and win.
    • 1 John 3:8-9 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.  Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
    • Principle of obedience over sacrifice
      • Psalm 40:6-8 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.  Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,  I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.
      • 1 Samuel 15:22-23 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

Father’s satisfaction with the Son

  • If your religion is still performing sacrifices like the mass in Roman Catholicism, it’s because that religion is vain.  Jihad in Islam.
  • You are members of his flesh and of his bones.  You know what matters to God?  The body he prepared for His Son the Lord Jesus Christ.  In that body God would accomplish everything He needed to accomplish to remove sin from his creation.
  • Verse 8, who is the “thou”?  The Father.
  • Verses 9-10 are the volunteering of the Son.  The shadow disappearing because the image itself has appeared.
  • I heard an old old story, how a savior came from glory!  How he gave his life on Calvary to save a wretch like me;  I heard about his groaning, of his precious blood’s atoning, then I repented of my sins and won the victory!  O victory in Jesus!
    • So much talk about God’s will always being done is so much garbage.  God needed a man that would actually do His will in the confines of flesh and blood.
    • Ephesians 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
  • The will of God is the removal of sin.  And you know that hasn’t changed.
  • I love verses 12-13.  You know he’s saying after the cross, resurrection and the ascension it is only a matter of time now.  John 12:31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
  • Just a note about verse 15, when the body of Jesus Christ went to be with the Father, the work of the Holy Ghost would begin.
    • John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
