Moses’ Faith Pt. 3 (Hebrews #42)

Text: Hebrews 11:28

Hebrews 11:28 Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.

This is Israel’s Independence Day (Exodus 12:2), this is their national birthday.

Faith on God’s terms

  • Stewardship of the faithful
  • Through faith he KEPT the passover…
    • So faith has caused Moses to refuse some things, to forsake Egypt in verse 27, and now it will cause him to keep something.
    • God gave Moses something to keep.  He gave him the passover to keep. Moses kept it and led many others to keep it as well.
    • To keep is much different than just knowing about it.
    • Genesis 26:5, Exodus 3:1 Moses kept the flock… not that Moses knew about the flock.
  • Direction for life
    • God would give very specific direction on what needed to be done to avoid the destroyer taking the life of the firstborn that night.  We’ll deal with the details in a moment, but for now understand that God explained how to have life while the destroyer would be let loose.
    • 1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.
    • John 6:68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
  • God’s direction was given to keep the destroyer from touching your home
    • Can you imagine an Israelite saying on that passover night that they love God, but they’re going to do their own thing.
    • Proverbs 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
    • The reason for revelation from God is so that you don’t do your own thing anymore.
    • Talking to a guy the other day, unsaved, he said during part of the conversation “I think God meets you where you’re at.”  What he was trying to say is that God accepts him where he’s at. God accepts you where the blood is at.
      • Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
      • Come as you are and stay as you are.  Your thoughts about your life are fine.  We don’t want you to be judged.
      • Conversion is not even necessary.
      • Forgiveness is not necessary.
      • Repentance not necessary.
      • New creature is not necessary. Galatians 6:15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.
      • Without faith, you get to a point where you call whatever you’re doing right or even righteous, without God having anything to do with it.
  • God help us be a congregation on God’s terms.
    • Exodus 12:3 – … these are words of life
    • Worship is worship as determined by God.
    • Sacrifice is sacrifice as determined by God.
    • Generosity is generosity as determined by God.
    • Love is love as determined by God.

Faith brings God’s acceptance and that’s all that matters

  • We read earlier in Hebrews that without faith it is impossible to please him…
  • When that destroyer was heading through Egypt, the only thing that mattered was whether God accepted that household or not.  God told Moses how to be accepted.
    • It wouldn’t make any difference whether people agreed or not.  What do they call it? Consenting adults? Two consenting adults without a consenting God is not protection from judgment.
    • God’s acceptance is what matters and faith brings God’s acceptance.
  • Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
  • Two types of God’s acceptance
    • God’s acceptance of you as a soul – Relationship
      • Now, Jesus Christ is our righteousness and by faith in him we are accepted in the beloved (Ephesians 1:6).
      • Galatians 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
    • God’s acceptance of your work
      • 1 Thessalonians 1:3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
      • 2 Thessalonians 1:11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:

God’s acceptance is based on Jesus Christ

  • What gives it power is that God accepts it.  God accepts it because it looks like Jesus Christ.
  • The passover is the Lamb (Exodus 12:11 & 1 Corinthians 5:7)
  • Lamb would be a victim.
  • Lamb according to the house and who would be able to consume it (Exodus 12:4)
  • Lamb without blemish.
  • Lamb was a male.
  • Lamb was in his first year, in other words, his strength.
  • Lamb would be set aside for further inspection for four days.
  • Entire Lamb was consumed with unleavened bread and bitter herbs (Exodus 12:8)
  • Eat it with preparations made to move out of Egypt (Exodus 12:11)
    • Israel was to prepare to move away from God’s judgment and the bondage of sin the world.
  • Continued as a memorial (Exodus 12:14)
  • Explain the passover to your children when they ask (Exodus 12:25-27)
  • No bones broken on the Lamb (Exodus 12:45)
  • Everywhere your life resembles Jesus Christ is where the Spirit of God is able to do His work.  And there is no condemnation from God in that area of your life.
