Matthew Overview

The kingdom of heaven is at hand (Chapters 1-4)

  • Genealogy of the Prince (Chapter 1)
    • 1:1-17 – Heritage of the Prince
      • Abraham and David are mentioned because God made significant covenants with each that will ultimately be fulfilled in Jesus Christ.  With Abraham he promised land in Genesis 15:18. With David he promised a throne in 2 Samuel 7:12-17.
      • Missing names in Matthew 1:8 are Ahaziah, Joash, Amaziah.  This fulfills Numbers 14:18
    • 1:18-25 – Virgin birth of the Prince.  The birth of the Prince was a miraculous virgin birth fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14.  This was made necessary by Jeremiah 22:30 when the royal line of Judah was cursed.
  • Childhood of the Prince (Chapter 2)
    • 2:1-10 – The Prince is born in Bethlehem
    • 2:11-15 – The Prince is called out of Egypt, Hosea 11:1.
    • 2:16-18 – Weeping in Rama because of the Prince – Massive infanticide would correspond with the Prince’s birth as prophesied by Jeremiah 31:15.
    • 2:19-23 – The Prince Is a Nazarene
  • Heralding the Prince (Chapter 3)
    • 3:1-6 – The voice crying in the wilderness
    • 3:7-12 – The Prince will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire;
    • 3:13-17 – The Prince is presented in baptism
  • Proving the Prince (Chapter 4)
    • 4:1-11 – The Prince is tempted
    • 4:12-16 – The Prince is the Light of the world – When the Lord Jesus Christ hears that John the Baptist was cast into prison marking the end of his ministry it signaled the time that Jesus should begin his ministry.  He travels to Capernaum fulfilling Isaiah 9:1-2.
    • 4:17 – The Prince preaches his kingdom
    • 4:18-22 – The Prince gathers converts
    • 4:23-25 – The Prince comes with healing

Righteousness in His kingdom (5-7)

  • Righteousness in the kingdom of heaven – Key verse in this chapter is 5:48.
    • 5:1-12 – Perfect character (The blessings)
    • 5:13-16 – Perfect identity
    • 5:17-20 – Perfect righteousness
    • 5:21-26 – Perfect attitude toward brothers
    • 5:27-32 – Perfect marriage
    • 5:33-37 – Perfect communication
    • 5:38-42 – Perfect justice
    • 5:43-47 – Perfect love
  • Righteousness in the kingdom of heaven – Key verse in this chapter is 6:33
    • 6:1-4 – Seeking God’s kingdom in almsgiving
    • 6:5-15 – Seeking God’s kingdom in prayer
    • 6:16-18 – Seeking God’s kingdom in fasting

  • Righteousness in the kingdom of heaven (Chapter 7)
    • 7:1-5 – Judgment
    • 7:6 – Equity

    • 7:15-20 – Fruitfulness (allowed to grow)
    • 7:21-23 – Reward
    • 7:24-29 – Foundation – taught as one having authority

Presentation of His kingdom (8-12)

  • The power over the curse (Chapter 8)
    • 8:1-4 – Over leprosy
      • The Prince instructs the leper to stay quiet about what’s happened because he has already been rejected by the synagogue in Capernaum in Luke 4:16-32.  Second the Prince touches the leper which the priests were not allowed to do except by a blood sacrifice.
    • 8:5-13 – Over palsy – (speak the word only 8:8)
    • 8:14-15 – Over fever
    • 8:16-17 – Fulfilling Isaiah 53:4 16-17
    • 8:18-22 – Commandment to depart (8:18)
      • Note here is to foxes and birds, both types of devils.  In a veiled sarcasm the Lord Jesus is saying the devil’s crowd is more comfortable in the world than God’s own.
    • 8:23-27 – Over weather – even the winds and sea obey him! (8:27)
    • 8:28-34 – Over devils – he said unto them, Go. (8:32)
  • Power of forgiveness (Chapter 9) – (Faith will lead to forgiveness)
    • 9:1-8 – Power to forgive
    • 9:9 – Call of faith (Matthew’s call) – Publican is called, not a Pharisee
    • 9:10-13 – Prince is looking for sinners
    • 9:14-17 – New creatures will receive new bodies (new cloth) and new wine is the blood of the New Testament where forgiveness is
    • 9:18-19 – Faith over death (worshipped him) – Genesis 22:5 worship associated with death, burial and resurrection
    • 9:20-26 – Jesus will stop the blood flow (sacrifices of the nation) and give new life
    • 9:27-31 – Two blind men healed (9:29 according to your faith)
    • 9:32-35 – Never seen In Israel – heals dumb man (9:34 first time Pharisees say he’s healing by the power of the devil) –Note Jesus heals ALL things in 9:35
    • 9:36-38 – Laborers few
  • The Prince commands his disciples (Chapter 10)
    • 10:1-15 – The Prince delegates twelve and their offer is the kingdom offer (Particularly vss 14-15)
    • 10:16-39 – The Prince warns and prepares his own twelve
    • 10:40-42 – The laborers will speak for the Prince
  • Those offended by the Prince (Chapter 11)
    • 11:1-6 – John the Baptist asks
    • 11:7-15 – Jesus says if you believed John then believe me
    • 11:16-19 – A generation offended by Christ
    • 11:20-24 – Judgment on Chorazin, Capernaum, and Bethsaida because they were offended in Christ – (Matthew 11:20, 21, 23 mighty works only time this phrase shows up in Matthew)
    • 11:25-27 – Revealed to the unoffended. (Humble, nothing to lose.)
    • 11:28-29 – Invitation by the Prince; he is humble and meek.
  • The offer rejected by Jewish leadership (Chapters 12)
    • 12:1-9 – Lord of the Sabbath rest is rejected (Sabbath was sign given to Jews)
    • 12:10-13 – Lord of Sabbath condemns Pharisees
    • 12:14-21 – Prince will light the Gentiles
    • 12:22-30 – Prince accused of having a devil (Notice mention of Son of David and kingdom)
    • 12:31-37 – Unpardonable sin warned
    • 12:38-45 – Gentiles will hear, but Israel filled with devils

The Second Coming of the Prince (Chapter 17-20)

  • Chapter 17 is Christ in His glory; it is the answer to the end of 16:28
    • After six days… taken to a mount… two witnesses coming prior to his 2nd coming (17:12 this could’ve already happened) 1-13
    • Disciples are faithless, must work in the Lord’s absence 14-21- Matthew 17:17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me
    • The Prince must die and rise again 22-23
    • Type of the 2nd coming the children are free (17:26) 24-27
  • Chapter 18 Offenses in the kingdom when the Prince returns
    • Entrance into the KOH – become like a child 1-6

Judgment in the kingdom (Chapter 21-25)

  • Chapter 21
    • 21:1-11 – Mt of Olives, riding a colt (Genesis 49:10-12, Zechariah 9:9-10, Revelation 19:17), again 2 disciples – 1st coming
    • 21:12-16 – Prince cleans the temple – 1st coming
    • 21:17-22 – withered fig tree – 1st coming (ripe fig tree 2nd coming)
    • 21:23-27 – Jesus’ authority questioned and baptism of John quiets them
    • 21:28-32 – Jesus condemns chief priests and elders with the faith of the publicans and sinners. KOG reference
    • 21:33-46 – Parable of the householder showing Israel’s lack of stewardship and Judgment when the Lord returns (21:42 the stone that the builders rejected is become the chief of the corner)
  • Chapter 22
    • 22:1-10 – Marriage supper of the Lamb in a parable
    • 22:11-14 – Satan cast into bottomless pit at the feast
    • 22:15-22 Judgment on Herodians (taxes)
    • 22:23-33 – Judgment on Sadducees (ignorant of the scriptures)
    • 22:34-40 – Judgment on Pharisees (broken commandments)
    • 22:41-46 – The Prince silences his critics
  • The Prince condemns the Pharisees and Scribes (Chapter 23)
    • 23:1-12 The scribes and Pharisees love to be seen

The Prince is cut off (Chapters 26-27)

  • 26:1-5 – Plot to kill the Prince
  • 26:6-13 – Preparation of the Prince’s body for death

  • 26:17-25 – The Prince identifies his betrayer
  • 26:26-35 – the Prince must shed his blood for the new testament
  • 26:36-46 – the Prince prays in the garden for an alternative if possible
