The Scriptures (The Bible Series)

Text: 2 Timothy 3:14-17

There are several things we can take from these verses regarding the scriptures (the Bible).

Availability of the scriptures

  • And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures…
  • Scriptures can be known by children.
  • Scriptures are not separated from people by a class of priests.
  • Mark 10:14-16 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. 15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. 16 And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.
  • You like to think of yourself as a child of God when it comes to salvation.  But who likes to think of themselves as a child of God when it comes to being told what to do by their heavenly Father?
  • Humility is how you’re going to learn the scriptures.
  • Scriptures have nothing to do with original manuscripts
    • Romans 3:1-2 What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.
      • You know why Joseph Smith and the Mormon’s other Testament is not scripture?  Joseph Smith wasn’t a Jew. (That’s one reason anyway.)
      • You know why the Quran is not scripture?  Mohamed is not a Jew. (That’s one reason anyway.)
    • Timothy had unique access to the Old Testament scriptures because his mother was Jewish.  BUT Timothy was not reading the stone tablets given to Moses.
    • Most teachers of the Bible limit inspiration to the original writings, but any copy of that is deemed corrupt in some way.  The reason that philosophy of God’s word exists is to allow for changes in God’s words.
      • Campus Crusade for Christ. The sole basis of our beliefs is the Bible, God’s infallible written Word, the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments. We believe that it was uniquely, verbally and fully inspired by the Holy Spirit and that it was written without error (inerrant) in the original manuscripts. It is the supreme and final authority in all matters on which it speaks.
      • Lutherans believe that the original autographs of Holy Scripture are completely free from any human error or inconsistency.
      • Dave Hunt: The Bible is inerrant in its original manuscripts, not in every copy that someone has produced since then.
      • Assemblies of God: We refer to original autographs. While the science of textual criticism assures us of a trustworthy text, inerrancy can be claimed only for the original writings (Jeremiah 36:2 [KJV/NIV]).
      • Moody Bible Institute: The Bible, including both the Old and New Testaments is a divine revelation, the original autographs of which WERE verbally inspired by the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:21)
      • Creation Research Society: The Bible is the written Word of God, and because it is inspired  throughout, all its assertions are historically and scientifically true in the original autographs.
      • Dallas Theological Seminary: We believe that all “Scripture is given by inspiration of God,” by which we understand the whole Bible is inspired in the sense that holy men of God “were moved by the Holy Spirit” to write the very words of Scripture. We believe that this divine inspiration extends equally and fully to all parts of the writings—historical, poetical, doctrinal, and prophetical—as appeared in the original manuscripts. We believe that the whole Bible in the originals is therefore without error.
      • Bob Jones University on the Scriptures: We believe, as Fundamentalists have always believed, that this inspiration refers to the original manuscripts.
      • Christian Apologetics Research Ministries: Inspiration and inerrancy applies to the original writings, not to the copies.  In other words, it is the original writings that are without error.  The copies, sadly, have copyist errors in them.
      • Church Unlimited. The Bible is God’s Word to us. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture of error. It is inerrant (without error in its original form).
      • Original documents don’t exist. They’ve all been destroyed over time, so are we to believe that God inspired something then lost it?  And all we are left with are uninspired copies of copies?
      • Did you know that every single time the word scripture shows up in the Bible it is a reference to a copy or a translation?
      • When Jesus Christ stood up in the temple and preached in Luke 4:17-21 he was preaching from a copy that was called scripture.  And he didn’t need to say, This is the best translation we have of these verses which were inspired in their original form, but a better translation would be…
    • God’s view of “original documents”
      • Exodus 32:19 and Exodus 34
      • Jeremiah 36:20-24 or Jeremiah 51:60-64.  But you have these things recorded today though the original documents were destroyed.
      • Deuteronomy 17:18-20

Salvation in the scriptures

  • …which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
  • Isn’t it amazing that words have the ability to change eternity for a soul?
  • Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God
  • 1 Corinthians 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
  • Or on the other hand you encounter the scriptures and…
  • 2 Peter 3:16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
  • Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition…
  • John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
  • 1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

Inspiration of the scriptures

  • All scripture is given by inspiration of God…
  • IS given, not WAS given.
  • 2 Peter 1:18-21 …spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
  • Argument that man wrote the Bible.  No doubt man wrote the Bible just like man wrote whatever book that critic is reading.  The question is what was the spirit in the man that wrote the words? If a critic held whatever his books are to the same standard he thinks he holds the Bible to, his books would fail miserably.
  • Stephen King writes books.  None of them are true. They’ve made him a lot of money because people are attracted to the spirit of the man.  But all his books came from him and are contained in a 40 year span of time.
  • The subject of the Bible is the LORD Jesus Christ guided by the Holy Ghost
  • 40 authors in different stations in life, in different times speak with the same voice—farmer may write about crops or a king may write about his dominion, but the Bible authors speak with one voice pointing to one person
  • Luke 24:44-45, 2 Corinthians 3:14
  • Prophecies of the Lord Jesus Christ
