The Rock is Christ (Part 2)

God’s word is associated with the Rock

  • Exodus 17:6 – The LORD goes before Moses to the rock and stands on the rock. The LORD tells Moses to smite the rock and the flock of Israel would be watered. The LORD is not the physical rock, but it was an illustration of Christ.
  • The rock in Horeb becomes the place where God gives Moses tables of stone with judgments, instructions, and commandments. Malachi 4:4 Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.
  • Do you see the type? The word of God was written in the rock. Jesus Christ, as the living Word of God, embodied the law and love of God. He, as a lively stone and the manifestation of the words of God.

Salvation is found in the Rock

  • Believing Israelites understood the rock as salvation: Hannah, Elijah, David
  • 2 Samuel 22:47 The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.
  • Psalms 18:46 The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.
  • Psalms 62:2,6-7 He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved. … 6 He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.
  • Psalms 89:26 He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.
  • Psalms 95:1 O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
  • Read Psalm 28:1 where the rock speaks and words from the rock are life.
  • Read Isaiah 51:1 about the nation of Israel being formed by the word of God (James 1:18 …of his own will begat he us – nation of Israel – with the word of truth…).

Many would reject the Rock

  • But there were unbelievers. The rejected Rock is introduced by Moses in Deuteronomy 32:16-18. (Psalm 118:21-24)
  • Isaiah 28:14-17 further describes the Rock that will be laid in Zion. Belief, faith in the Rock and the words that come from the rock is required. Paul quoted this to show why most of Israel was damned in Romans 9:30-33, but many Gentiles were accepted. Jesus cites the same thing to show why people like the Pharisees were rejected in Matthew 21:42-46. Peter recites it as well, 1 Peter 2:4-10 (stumble at the word, being disobedient vs 8)
  • Luke 6:46-49 House built on a rock. (Not that they didn’t call him Lord, but that they didn’t respond in faith to what he said.)
  • Then in 1 Corinthians 10:1-5 Paul speaks to heathen Gentiles saying I want you to know something about my history and my ancestors’ history. I’m going to tell you some of our history so I can instruct you. Israel crossed the Red Sea then followed the cloud according to Exodus 13:21-22. All ate and drank spiritual food and drink which was the doctrines and instructions for the nation. If you think physical food and drink you’re thinking like Nicodemus. He said SPIRITUAL. It’s the same eating and drinking in John 6:53-63. It’s also water as a type of the Holy Spirit of God in John 7:37-39. Also Ephesians 5:26. Matthew 28 baptism is teaching just like Moses’ baptism was.
