Behold Thy King Cometh (Matthew #100)

This was the LORD Jesus Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem and furthermore into the temple. Immediately after the LORD Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead in the town of Bethany, he headed into Jerusalem. He waited four days after Lazarus died because the timing wasn’t right. Then, on what would’ve been our Friday morning before the Wednesday that Jesus Christ was crucified (yes, Wednesday), these events with the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ occurred.

Christ entered Jerusalem and subsequently into the temple in this very public way fulfilled three aspects of God’s work in Jesus Christ. The event is recorded by Mark in Mark 11:1-11 and by Luke in Luke 19:28-40 and by John in John 12:12-19. Every one of them makes reference to the same three prophetic statements in the old testament.

This event is pivotal in the ministry of the LORD Jesus Christ as it would fulfill and bring together three prophecies the Holy Ghost had spoken of the LORD centuries before. One spoken by Jacob nearly 1700 years before this event. Another spoken by David nearly a thousand years before this event. And another spoken by Zechariah about 550 years before this event.

Genesis 49:8-12

  • The King comes out of Judah and Jerusalem in Judah is the King’s home.
  • Judah would provide the ass and colt while Christ is the vine. John 15:1, 5 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman … 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
  • You could say that the first and second coming are right together and thousands of years are contained within the same sentence. But a better way of putting this is that many times in the Bible the ministry of Jesus Christ is spoken of in its entirety.

Zechariah 9

  • Zechariah is speaking of the presence of the King in Jerusalem. He speaks of the physical deliverance and the clearing of sin by this King. He brings peace and speaks peace to the heathen. The King’s people are like sheep and stones and glorious in His salvation.
  • Zechariah explains the demeanor of the King is meek and lowly.
  • NOTE: For you Bible students, it’s noteworthy that Jesus Christ’s triumphal entry is on an ass, and Balaam, a false prophet, is rebuked by an ass. There is something to that.

Psalm 118:19-29

  • The people acknowledged the salvation of the LORD. The rejected stone has become the head of the corner.
