The LORD’s House (2 Samuel #11)

Text: 2 Samuel 7:1-17

David’s comparison (vss 1-3)

  • David has a desire to build the LORD’s house because he saw a discrepancy between the prosperity in his life and the humble dwelling of the things of God.
  • David compares the way he’s treated to the way God is treated.
  • Uncommon comparison
  • Good comparison

Divine construction (vss 4-11)

  • While the LORD appreciates David’s desire, for 400 years the LORD moved in portable tents and never wanted a permanent structure.
  • The LORD builds the house, the LORD builds the ministry.
    • The LORD had exalted David.
    • The LORD had removed enemies out of David’s life.
    • The LORD would establish a resting place for his own people.
  • Except the LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it.
  • 1 Corinthians 3:9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.

Dominion of Jesus Christ (vss 12-17)

  • The LORD’s house will be built on the seed of David (vs 12).
  • Jesus Christ will build the house of God (vs 13)
    • For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
    • The tabernacle of the LORD would be the body of Christ (Hebrews 10:5-10)
    • …upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
  • Jesus Christ will rule the everlasting kingdom (vs 13).
  • Jesus Christ will bear his own iniquity (vs 14)
    • This poses a problem because Jesus Christ had no sin.
    • Though he is sinless, there was a time in his life when he was identified as a sinner. Isaiah 53:5, 8 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed… 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
  • Jesus Christ will carry the mercy of God because of his obedience (vs 15)
    • The throne would not be taken away as it was with Saul because of Saul’s disobedience.
    • Ultimately the LORD is looking for obedience (1 Samuel 15:22-23).
    • Isaiah 55:3 Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Fulfilled in Acts 13:34
  • Jesus Christ is the person of prophecy (vs 17)
    • The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
    • No prophecy is of any private interpretation because it’s not about you or me, it’s about Jesus Christ.
