Giving Place to the Devil (2 Samuel #18)

Text: 2 Samuel 13

David, the giant slayer, the man after God’s own heart, the king of Israel, an adulterer who killed an innocent man, this David has multiple children with multiple wives. He will have 19 named children by 8 women when the record is written. (It’s clear why the LORD never wanted to put a throne in Israel before the Lord Jesus Christ. But against God’s reasonable judgment, because of the demand of the people, God gave Israel a throne.) Within David’s household, the rivalry and ambition for the throne were treacherous.

The chapter begins with David’s golden child, Absalom. He is the one David has picked to take his place as king at this point. David had a daughter named Tamar by the same woman as Absolam’s mother.

David has another son by another woman, his name is Amnon. Amnon is this spoiled child. He is consumed with lust for his half-sister Tamar. It is eating him up. He is so focussed on his lust that it’s made him sick in body and mind. Amnon’s cousin Jonadab is still bitter that his dad isn’t king. Jonadab sees the opportunity to ruin his uncle’s family. Jonadab offers Amnon a way to carry out his lusts and rape Tamar. He says pretend you’re sick and invite your half-sister over. Have Tamar make you a little food and when she brings it to you take her.

Amnon tricks his sister and rapes her (vss 6-14)
Amnon hates Tamar now. His lust has been acted on and now he hates Tamar. (vss 15-18)
Absalom plans to kill Amnon who raped his sister. (vss 19-27)
Absalom kills Amnon and flees the country (vss 28-39)
Lessons

  • I learned what uncontrolled emotion does to the body – Amnon’s lust is all-consuming, affecting his physical and mental health (vs 2)
  • I learned what Satan’s voice sounds like – Jonadab is the Satan in this chapter; his motives are destruction and his method is to encourage the lusts of the flesh. He is subtil. (vss 3-5)
  • I learned that fleshy desires are deceitful (vs 15) – Girls, when the boy gets what he wants from you, he won’t think of you the same way. And it won’t be long before he moves on to the next shiny object.
  • I learned that Satan is untouched by the damage he causes (vss 30-33)
  • I learned that frustration with authority can be legitimate, but not actionable (vs 37) – This is the beginning of Absalom’s disgust with his dad.
  • I learned that people operating in the promise of God can welcome Satan in and lose a lot (vs 39) – Not everything is a salvation issue. Some of you have rolled out a welcome mat for the devil.
