Purge Fornication

Text: 1 Corinthians 5

Standards lower than the world’s standards (vss 1-2)

  • Even the world thinks this is disgusting, but for some reason, you embrace it?!
  • 2 Kings 21:9 But they hearkened not: and Manasseh seduced them to do more evil than did the nations whom the LORD destroyed before the children of Israel.
  • When the world has higher standards than God’s people, it’s a terrible situation.
    • The world understands the value of educating children.
    • The world understands giving to their causes.
    • The world understands showing up to participate

Get the disease out of the body (vss 3-5)

  • Remove this sin for the corporate good. The context will explain that.
  • The point is how this is affecting the congregation.

Your self-congratulation makes you blind (vs 6).

  • Your self-righteousness makes you blind to reality.
  • Matthew 15:14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
  • Matthew 23:16,24

A little leaven (vss 7-8)

  • If you tolerate a little, you’ll have to tolerate much.
  • Destruction is not usually catastrophic, but slow and steady.
  • Leaven filters through the whole body.

Removal based on vile behavior (vss 9-13).

  • It’s not about avoiding lost people, it’s about people carrying the name of the LORD.
  • …if a man be called a brother…
  • Put away from among YOURSELVES
  • Sound doctrine is behavior
    • This needs to be understood because some people believe having the right doctrine means knowing how to “rightly divide” the bible. So the righteousness is in the information for them. But if you’ve memorized Jack Hyles handbook on how to do church, but can’t stop looking at pornography, you haven’t got it. If you’ve bought all of Clarence Larkin’s books but don’t know how to control your gossip, you’ve missed it. The point is not knowing. The point is seeing the light so you can walk in the light!
    • 1 Timothy 1:10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
    • 2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
    • Titus 2:1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
    • Deuteronomy 32:1-4
  • The guy may or may not be saved. It doesn’t matter because the issue isn’t whether he’s saved or not. The issue is his behavior. Paul nor the Holy Spirit care whether he prayed a prayer when he was 8 years old. It’s irrelevant to the issue. The problem is evil communications corrupt good manners.
