Text: Ephesians 4:25
Notice the victory in Christ is not the disappearance of a temptation. It is putting off the temptation. Now that there is a new man, you put off the old man and put on the man. So when you get saved the old man doesn’t disappear. Put the old man away.
Lies we told
- Lying is:
- Natural – Old man, the flesh, is a liar. The Psalmist said they go forth speaking lies from the womb.
- John 8:44 the devil teaches men the benefits of lying.
- Comfortable – He talks about people who delight in lies, they bless with their mouth, but curse inwardly. People prefer to be lied to in many cases. Isaiah said they make lies their refuge.
- Teachers of lies. Job accused his accusers of being liars and physicians with no value.
- Proverbs 17:4 …wicked give ear to a liar…
- Generational lies – Jeremiah 16:19 …our fathers have inherited lies…
- The old man makes excuses
- An excuse is how we cloak irresponsibility or laziness
- Sometimes it’s a spiritual excuse
- I’ve prayed about this…
- I feel the Lord is leading me…
- Acts 21:11-14 Paul’s affection for his own people brought him out of the will of God.
- Sometimes it’s a safety excuse
- Proverbs 26:13
- Here is someone saying they can’t leave the house. What happens if you never leave your house? Let’s follow the trail of problems that will arise from this excuse. And keep in mind what this man’s problem is in the first place. He’s lazy. If you’re not addressing the laziness, you’re addressing the symptoms of his laziness. This is where we are psychologically these days and even medically and socially; we are dealing with symptoms.
- The old man uses flattery
- The old man is always angling for himself.
- The old man manipulates
- Remember us in your prayers…
- Sometimes it’s by volunteering information
- Sometimes it’s by leaving out information
- The old man exaggerates
- 2 Peter 3:18-22 …great swelling words of vanity…
- Boasting is exaggeration.
- The old man loves juicy gossip
Truth is the voice of the new man
- People think truth is up for grabs. Arguing about truth being relative; “Your truth.”
- It’s one thing to know the truth, but quite another thing to speak the truth.
- Truth is light
- Truth is exposure. It is revelation.
- Truth is the light that will expose your sin.
- Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
- Proverbs 6:23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
- John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world…
- Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world…
- 1 Thessalonians 5:5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
- Reject the light because you want to hide their sin. Neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
- Truth as exposure is very helpful when you’re trying to see where you’re going. John 8:12 …he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
- Psalm 86:11 Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth:
- Psalm 25:5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me
- Truth is liberation
- John 8:31-32 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.
- Mouth has been freed up to speak the truth – John 8:36 if the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
- Jesus Christ is the truth and makes men free from sin
- Blindness by the devil or distraction. Deceit is darkness.
- Truth is a liability
- Truth has a price.
- Buy the truth and sell it not Proverbs 23:23.
- Sometimes the truth cost you your feelings when someone tells you the truth.
- Sometimes the truth cost you your family. Or the truth cost you friends.
