David’s Hope (2 Samuel #28)

Text: 2 Samuel 23:1-7

Last words (vss 1-2)

  • David’s last words are more about David listening to the Holy Spirit of God speak and David bowing his head in failure, but looking to the future with hope.
  • David started these final words saying, The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, so David is a prophet in this. And he knows he’s a prophet in these words. Remember that holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. And that no prophecy of scripture is of any private interpretation because prophecy is about Jesus Christ. And the testimony of Jesus Christ is the spirit of prophecy.

Leadership of Jesus Christ (vs 3)

  • Christ rules in the fear of God
  • This means he’s just and treats people equitably. There is no respect of persons for Jesus Christ. His scale is fair and right.
  • This means he’s just and forgives the repentant sinner. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Light as Jesus Christ (vs 4)

  • Christ is as the Sun of righteousness
  • This means Christ is light. His people will be light. The righteous shall shine forth. And Christ rises as the Sun of righteousness.
  • Walk in the light. Thy word is light to my feet and a lamp to my path.
  • This is what John the baptist called the baptism of the Spirit of God. When believing souls are instructed in the ways of God’s righteousness.

Life in Jesus Christ (vs 4)

  • Christ will grow up as a tender herb into the Branch
  • This speaks of his meekness. It means his power is spiritual, not as a thundering athlete. Is he capable of violence? Yes. This magnifies his power and self-control and mercy.
  • It also describes the new life springing up.

Looking to Christ for salvation (vs 5)

  • These are the sure mercies of David. His throne will one day be occupied by God manifest in the flesh, the Christ.
  • David says this is his only hope, but it is a sure hope. And this is David’s desire and it’s an anchor to his soul although that man is not in view yet (he maketh it not to grow).
  • David considers what the LORD’s leadership will look like one day. He laments his own failures. He laments his sin and broken family. He knows he could not do the will of God as a shepherd. But he looks to the future with hope. David holds close to himself the promise of God. He is filled with encouragement that one day the Messiah, the Christ, the real man of God will sit on David’s throne.
  • David knows the Messiah is not yet come. He knows Solomon is not the Messiah, but he knows Solomon is the man who needs to be king because he is the child born from forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God.

Lost are burned (vss 6-7)

  • Christ’s leadership separates the wheat from the chaff. The wicked and lost souls are burned. This is the baptism of fire that John the baptist spoke about.

The lesson from David’s life is he needs God to justify and save him.
