That Which is Come to Pass (Luke #5)

Text: Luke 2:8-20

Let’s begin by reading verses 15-20. This statement by the shepherds is glorious. That which is come to pass means we’re talking about a real event in time, at a place, with real people’s lives, and in reality. That which is come to pass leads me to ask what has come to pass?

The heavenly kingdom sent its ambassador (vss 8-11)

  • History was full of prophets who spoke on behalf of the kingdom of heaven, but now the ambassador has been sent. That ambassador is the Son of the Almighty King and Father.
  • Heaven announced the birth of this baby as the most glorious gift given to mankind.
  • KOH is at hand – it is within arms reach.
  • KOH is like man; KOH is like a merchant man; KOH is like a man who is a householder; KOH is like a certain king; KOH is like a man traveling
  • KOH suffers violence since the days of John Baptist’s ministry. This is something Jesus Christ said of himself. He is the representation of heaven’s kingdom on earth

The Savior of mankind entered the world (vss 10-11)

  • Whether you know it or not Jesus Christ is the solution to the problems you face. Sin is the problem and Jesus Christ is the solution to sin.
  • What a thought! Not a great athlete, not a billionaire, not a politician, not a police officer, not a philosopher, not an educator has entered the world, but a Savior! That isn’t to say these careers are bad, it’s just to say that Jesus Christ’s identity is Savior! His occupation is Savior!
  • What does he save from? You’ll call his name Jesus for he shall save his people from their sins. AMEN!

The Lamb of God was born as he died (vs 12)

  • Jesus Christ’s birth would be attended by shepherds. Not by priests or even nurses or other family members. This is unmistakably picturesque. These are not the elements of a man’s birth, they are the elements of a lamb’s birth.
  • Jesus Christ was born the way He died – as the Lamb of God
  • Jesus Christ would be born as a lamb and he would die as a lamb. Where Luke tells us there were shepherds and a manger and a stable accompanying the birth of Jesus Christ. Isaiah tells us about Christ’s death as a lamb in Isaiah 53:6-7.

The Father’s generosity was offered (vss 13-14)

  • For God so loved the world that he gave…
  • The law of sin and death was not an opinion, it was/is immutable fact. It was not a possibility or a theory, it was an inevitable outcome that death resulted from sin. Therefore the cost to God to undo this cancer in creation, it would take the death of a man God would accept. That is the death of the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • As the solution to all that plagued man and creation was born in a stable, heaven rejoiced and glorified the Father for such a generous offering. And therefore he would highly exalt the Son above every name and make him the King of kings and Lord of lords.
