Excellence in music
- To the chief musician…
- God gave people musical abilities for a reason. David played skillfully, he didn’t just “make a joyful noise”
- Make a joyful noise idea… but we would also say don’t take one verse of scripture and build an entire doctrine on it yet some folks build an entire basis for church music on that one verse taken out of context.
Congregational prayer to God
- David understood the spiritual influence of music for a group of people when they make God their audience.
- So what I feel isn’t the goal.
- Psalm 150. It should glorify God
- The purpose and end of all things is the glory of God.
- Music can be aimed at many things.
- Sometimes it’s aimed at your emotions or lusts so it can get hold of your wallet.
- Sometimes music can be aimed at unclean spirits.
- Bach said, “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.”
Ability of music to teach
- Music instructs the heart
- Psalm 49:4
- Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16 – teaching one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.
- a minstrel played and the hand of the Lord was on Elisha – 2 Kings 3:1
- spiritual music accompanied prophecy – book of Psalms, 1 Chronicles 25:1-3, 1 Samuel 10:5-6
- Music that is principally sung if it is going to direct your thoughts toward God and the Lord Jesus Christ. Same way with music that’s not of God or for God. It will direct your thoughts to something godless.
- Music must be Biblically accurate.
Music will fill the vessel
- Music and filling go hand in hand
- Music will put a spirit in you.
- Memorize Bible songs that minister to you. Or remember old music. Either way, music has a way of filling a vessel like nothing else does. Because of this, here are some principles of music.
- Go to the bar, listen to music, get drunk.
- Club, loud music, fornication, that’s the spirit of the thing.
