Text: Colossians
Need for this letter and theme of the letter is found in 2:1-3. Colossians 2:1-3 For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; 2 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; 3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Paul is absent from the Colossians (2:1-3) and he emphasizes that everything is to be found in Jesus Christ. This is the letter Paul wrote to a church he hadn’t met yet. So what the Holy Spirit through Paul would say to a church that Paul has never seen face to face is the book of Colossians. His theme is that Jesus Christ is preeminent in all things. Preeminence: Superiority in excellence; distinction in something commendable; precedence; priority of place; superiority in rank or dignity; superiority of power or influence.
