The context in the sermon on the mount here is about laying up treasure in verses 19-23 and worry about not having enough treasure in verses 25-34. In both cases the god is mammon and it prevents someone from serving the Lord. Serving the Lord is a theme throughout the entire Bible.
Exodus 1:13-14 and Exodus 8:1 and Deuteronomy 11:13-16. The nation of Israel is the only nation in the world to have its legal system and culture divinely revealed, promised, and proven by the power of God. But most individuals in the Hebrew nation would turn to the world and serve the god of this world instead.
- Service in the OT meant everything revolved around the words of God.
- About 1 out of every 70-80 men was dedicated to full time ministry of the tabernacle.
- Everyone else had farms, ranches, business people, servants performing various services, and they supported the ministry of the tabernacle.
Joshua 24:14-23. Joshua says choose you this day who to serve. Israelites say they will serve God and Joshua responds with the truth that you can’t serve God. It’s one thing to sin while you’re serving God because of your flesh. It’s another thing to throw God a bone while you serve idols.
Judges 2:18-19 the downward spiral of sin in serving other gods.
1 Samuel 12:20-25 Samuel pleads with Israel to serve the Lord.
2 Chronicles 7:12, 17-20 Solomon is given promises in the path of service and judgment in the path of disobedience.
Jeremiah 13:1-11 …This evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which walk in the imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is good for nothing…
