Text: Job 9-10
We’re going to cover Job’s complaint in Job 9-10, and the main point of Job’s complaint is found in Job 9:32-33. Job clearly understands his need. The only way any man could be justified before God is if a daysman, a mediator, appeared on the scene to represent God to man and man to God. But there is no such thing in Job’s time.
And so Job’s complaint is wisdom explaining the need for Jesus Christ and prophecy about Jesus Christ 1800 years before the Lord Jesus Christ leaves his home in glory and is born into this world as a man.
Jesus Christ is the Justifier (9:1-2)
- Romans 3:24-26 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
- Job doesn’t know the answer to his question, how should man be just with God, but he is wise enough to know man cannot justify himself before God (9:20).
- Romans 5:1, 9 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: … 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Jesus Christ is the Advocate (9:3)
- 1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
- Some folks use the excuse that even if they trust Jesus Christ they’ll still sin. The answer is yes and the answer is you have an advocate with the Father in Jesus Christ.
- You know when you need an advocate? When you’ve messed up.
Jesus Christ is the fullness of the Godhead bodily (9:4-31)
- Job is wise enough to know he cannot approach God
- Job’s separated from God’s wisdom (9:4)
- Job’s separated from God’s strength by his weakness (9:5-7)
- Job’s separated from God’s greatness (9:8-10)
- Job’s separated from God in his own insignificance (9:11-16)
- Job cannot approach to make an appointment with God (9:19)
- He’s separated by his own guilt (9:27-28)
- Man corruption has separated him from God (9:30-31). Job has no cleansing agent. His defense against his accusers is that there is no way for man to be clean before Almighty God. Job says he could take the purest thing he knows about and bathe himself in it – wash myself with snow water and make my hands never so clean – meaning make myself cleaner than I’ve ever been and I still could not be clean before Almighty God. Job says he’d still end up in a grave corrupting.
- These are some of the most troubling things before the appearance of the Lord Jesus Christ. Man does not know God on a personal level. God is separate from man and that’s all man can know of God. All Job knows of God is fear (9:34-35) because he can’t know God on any other basis at this point.
- Colossians 2:9-10 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
- 1 John 1:1-2 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
Jesus Christ is the mediator between God and man (9:32-35)
- 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
- Hebrews 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
Jesus Christ is the Son of man (10:1-13)
- In Jesus Christ God has eyes of flesh (10:4)
- In Jesus Christ God’s life is shortened and he would face death like man (10:5-6)
- In Jesus Christ God is manifest in the flesh (10:9-11)
- Great mystery of godliness, God was manifest in the flesh…
- But in Jesus Christ man knew God as weak like himself.
- In Jesus Christ man knew God as subordinate to many things like himself.
- Luke 2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
- Hebrews 5:7-9 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; 8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; 9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
Jesus Christ would become sin for man (10:14-19)
- 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Jesus Christ would taste death for man
- Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
- 1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
Job doesn’t realize, but his complaint he has just made the case to God for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ who would become everything man needs to be reconciled to God.
