Text: Colossians 3:1
In the last few months you’ve watched the kingdoms of this world be placed under a spirit of fear. You’ve watched our nation get torn apart by people who will not survive the anarchy they’ve created. You’ve watched “conservative” Supreme Court justices bow down to the mob. And you’ve watched every politician elected to be the savior of the nation fall prey to the prince of the power of the air. You’ve watched cities set on fire. You’ve watched people die on video at the hands of mobs. These are no doubt troublesome times for our nation and for the world. And we’ve all been made to drink from this cup in some way or another.
But if you’re risen with Christ because your faith is in Jesus Christ, your home is not burning. Your country is not subject to the spirit of fear. Your home is called rest. By faith, you sit above the wickedness that runs this world. And I can’t think of a more appropriate message to faithful, born again, justified souls than this verse right here.
Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
What are you supposed to look for? …seek those things which are above… What are “those things”? What are the things that reside with Jesus Christ alone that saved souls living in a present evil world are supposed to lay hold on?
Seek wisdom that is above (as opposed to carnal wisdom)
- 1 Corinthians 1:30-31
- Proverbs 2:1-5
- James 1:5-8, 3:17
Seek righteousness that is above
- 1 Corinthians 1:30-31
- Psalm 71:19
Seek sanctification that is above
- 1 Corinthians 1:30-31
- 1 John 3:2-3 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
Seek redemption
- 1 Corinthians 1:30-31
- Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
Seek rewards
- Matthew 5:12
- Matthew 6:19-21
Seek justice that is above
- Romans 12:17-21 Look to the Lord to make things right.
How do you conduct the search? If I’m going to seek out things that I can’t see, how do I do that?
Prayer as the first thing to do
- Psalm 5:1-3 (verse 3)
- Not my phone, not Facebook, not Instagram, not FOX News, not YouTube
- You know why your day is miserable? Because you started it off looking for bad news and you find it everyday.
Quit looking to other sources for help
- Amos 5:4-5. Stop confusing yourself by accepting answers from multiple sources.
- If I’m going to find the right things, I have to call off the search for the wrong things. I keep devoting precious time and energy, resources, into things that make me miserable.
- John 5:44 you must stop seeking honor from men which is also said in Hebrews 11:6
Work righteousness
- Amos 5:6-7 (work with the light you have)
- Romans 2:7 This sounds like a description of salvation by works, but it’s not and here’s why. God is not rewarding the seeker with eternal life because of his search. God is giving to every man exactly what he is looking for. If someone is seeking for the glory of God and eternal life, the Lord will reward that man by showing him those things. Just like Jesus told the Pharisees, Search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life and they are they which speak of me. Meaning if you’re looking for the righteousness of God, if you’re looking for the Christ, the path has already been laid down in the scriptures to find him.
Remember the Lord is above the gods that have left you confused – Amos 5:8-9.
