The concept of trusting the LORD is abstract. People say it about almost anything. “Well, I’m just going to trust the LORD.” What does that mean? Or someone whose life says nothing about belief in the LORD says, “Oh yea, I’m a Christian.” You say you’re going to trust God, the more important question is HOW are you going to trust the Lord. James addresses this idea that peoples’ talk has little to no value unless there is some corresponding action with it. James 2:18-20 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? These proverbs show what trusting the LORD looks like. The proverbs are the mechanics of an abstract idea.
Don’t lean on your understanding
- Maybe you have experience in an area, but the word of God says that’s not right.
- Maybe your emotions are telling you something contrary to what God said.
- Because there is so much deception.
- Because of incomplete information – “I don’t understand”
- The pundits all say, “I think.” It’s an interpretation that could be based on a number of things.
Acknowledge the LORD in what you’re doing
- Acknowledging the LORD so that you get direction from Him.
- Acknowledging is almost like deferring to Him.
- If someone was suffering a health problem and there was a doctor in the room, you’d probably acknowledge them.
- This acknowledging of God is in all thy ways so that the Creator has an opportunity to direct your path.
- Walk by faith…
- Verse 6 is the opposite of going your own way and then asking for God’s blessing on your way.
Depart from evil
- I’m going to depart from evil; that’s how I’m going to trust the LORD.
- The one that is educated in the government institutions will have trouble giving up his wisdom to defer to the LORD’s wisdom.
Honor the LORD with your substance
- This will tell you more about your spiritual health than anything else. Where your treasure is, there your heart is also.
- When it comes to money and stuff, you and I are more interested in getting it than giving it. Ephesians 4:28
