There are several things that prevent your prayer and my prayer from leaving the room. Worse yet, sometimes a prayer can make God mad.
Regarding sin in my heart
-
- Psalm 66:18
- Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
Refuse to listen to the LORD
- Proverbs 28:9
- Vain repetition; recite some prayer without any concern for what the LORD may be say.
Looking for help from the wrong source
- Ezekiel 14:3
- Your help comes from alcohol; “You don’t want my help,” the LORD says. Go to your bartender and ask him to pay your light bill.
- Your god is that athlete. Why don’t you call him to get your child out of the hospital?
Personal tendencies
- 2 Corinthians 12:9
- Paul’s thorn is there to stay because it keeps him usable by God.
Faithlessness
- James 1:2-8
- This is very specific to a trial of faith where there is little understanding, like Job, and the temptation is to give up on the LORD.
Lack of asking
- James 4:2
Your motive is wrong
- James 4:3
- What you plan on doing with the answer has nothing to do with God’s business.
Husband treating his wife poorly
- 1 Peter 3:7
