Text: Exodus 4:1-9
The LORD understands there is no expectation that Israelites should believe Moses without any proof. So God gives Moses three signs as witnesses that He is with Moses. Now God doesn’t even expect Pharaoh to believe Moses at face value, so two of these signs will also be for Pharaoh. Of course, these signs are not random signs. They are full of foreshadowing which is what we’ll look at this afternoon.
Rod of God becomes a snake
- People believing enough to look upon a snake lifted up on a pole would be the account John likened to Jesus Christ being lifted up on the cross and people looking to the cross for salvation.
Healing the deadly disease
- Acts 28:27 Paul quotes Isaiah who associates the conversion of people with healing. Isaiah said lest they be converted and I heal them. The healing speaks of something bigger than just healing disease, but the healing of sin.
Water is turned into blood
- The water that fed the nation of Egypt; that is essential to all life. That water is turned into death. You’ll notice when Moses does this in the next chapter that the living things die. You’ll also notice that the waters that turn to blood are those waters that the rod of God has touched.
- The first public miracle Jesus does in John 2 is turning water into wine. But he first protests his mother Mary when she mentions there is no more wine. Jesus says his hour is not yet come, speaking of his death, and clearly spiritualizing her comments about wine being a type of his blood.
