Sacrifice

Text: 1 Peter 3:17-18

Memorial Day tomorrow when we remember the sacrifice of men and women for their nation. With that in mind, I’d like to talk to you about the sacrifice of the LORD Jesus Christ this morning.

Unjust suffering

  • once suffered for sins
  • Now look at verse 17. Consider the LORD’s view of that. Suffering for well-doing is a highlight. The injustice that is so distasteful is the same injustice that the LORD uses to His good purpose.
  • Someone asked a good question about this a while back. Why is Jesus’ death necessary to fix things? That sounds harsh and mean.
    • As the unjust suffering of Christ was pleasing to God because it was the holiness of God triumphing over the wickedness of man.
    • God’s mercy over a merciless world.God’s longsuffering over a hasty and hateful world.
    • Because all of these attributes of God were manifest in Jesus Christ and they endured even through death, Jesus Christ became the only acceptable man ever.

Substitutionary

  • the just for the unjust
  • That is a substitutionary death because Jesus Christ’s death is the only death of a man that God the Father ever accepted.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
  • John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
  • Bro Wesson died saving 3 boys in the Dominican Republic as a missionary. Leaving behind four children. He was my age. I saw that and my heart sank. But I also thought, what a heritage to leave your children, because I have friends whose mom or dad died with secrets that came out about them. Not gossip, but real-life iniquity that now their children live with knowing about their mom or dad.

Reconciliation

  • that he might bring us to God
  • But Jesus Christ’s job is to bring you to God
  • In 8 words the entire Bible and scope of God’s redemptive work is summed up, by him to reconcile all things unto himself.
  • If God’s work and God’s word are all aimed at reconciling all things to the Lord Jesus Christ, then that makes our business reconciliation as well (2 Corinthians 5:18-19).
  • Now, part of the problem Christians face is explaining to people far from God that they are far from God. That’s getting even tougher considering lots of people don’t believe in any God.

Eternal life

  • being put to death in the flesh – Christ crucified – but quickened by the spirit
  • quickened means to be made alive – resurrected
  • The work of Jesus Christ as savior is vindicated and completed in his resurrection.
  • declared to be the Son of God with power…by the resurrection from the dead
  • This gospel is not about making bad people better, it is about bringing dead people to life

This is a great evangelistic outline so that you could take one verse and preach the entire gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ explaining all the facets of the gospel.
