Text: Exodus 19
Royal priesthood (vss 1-8)
- This is the old mountain where Moses used to keep his father-in-law’s flock.
- God’s deliverance
- The LORD brought them out in order to bring them in.
- Wings of the LORD (Ruth 2:12, Isaiah 40:31, Malachi 4:2, Revelation 12:14)
- God’s desire
- Obedience is God’s desire
- God’s law is good, if you’ll listen to the LORD, you’ll be a kingdom of priests (1 Peter 2:5,9, Revelation 1:6, 5:10, 20:6). It isn’t about being a military superpower. You’ll become the arbiter of holiness to all the people of the earth.
- You’ll be peculiar in the sense that you’ll resemble God Almighty. Not peculiar in the sense of weirdos.
- The people agree with God’s standard.
Prepare to hear God (vss 9-15)
- God’s powerful approach with thunders and lightning.
- Sanctify the people.
- Wash yourselves.
- Get clean.
- Set up boundaries.
- Stay away from the mountain.
- They set up a physical boundary to keep people away from the mountain.
- Sexual activity is forbidden for three days
- It’s like fasting where pleasure is denied in preparation to hear from God.
- Like Paul said in 1 Corinthians 7:5.
One final warning (vss 16-25)
- The LORD shows up on day three.
- But before God gives Moses the law, He makes one final warning that Moses doesn’t think is necessary. Apparently, the curiosity of many Israelites was a problem. So the LORD says tell the people to stay away from the mountain.
- Moses doesn’t think this is necessary, but God makes him go down the mountain one more time to tell the people.
Here at the very beginning, the basis for the new covenant is already being laid down. God wants obedience. Obedience is what will make you a holy nation.
