Not a Drunk
Text: Titus 1:7
So this is another one of those controversial things.
- It’s controversial because there’s always been a lot of money in the alcohol business.
- It’s controversial because people can be very attached to the good feelings they get from alcohol.
- It’s controversial because some people’s lives have been ruined by drunkenness.
What we’re dealing with is what the Bible says. The instruction is that an elder or bishop should not be given to much wine. Given to MUCH wine is the problem otherwise known as drunkenness (1 Timothy 3:8, Titus 2:3). It’s similar to the anger qualification where Paul said not soon angry.
Specific prohibition against strong drink in Leviticus 10:8-11 for the priesthood while ministering in the tabernacle.
In Deuteronomy 14:22-27 the LORD gives instruction to Israelites bringing offerings to the tabernacle who have to travel long distances or have too much to carry.
Uses of strong drink
- Used for sorrow. (Proverbs 31:4-7)
- Used for medicine (1 Timothy 4:23)
Warnings about strong drink
