Not Greedy
Titus 1:7
Greed perverts judgment
- The common theme that Paul is trying to avoid is putting someone in oversight who judgment will be perverted. It may be perverted because they can’t control their emotions, anger particularly. Their judgment is perverted if they are self-willed, they must get their way. Their judgment will be perverted if they’re drunkards. And in this case, the judgment is perverted because someone loves money.
The new priesthood can’t be covetous
- 1 Samuel 8:3 Samuel’s sons took bribes and perverted judgment based on who was paying them.
- The Pharisees loved money and power. They were a product of a carnal system: the old covenant.
Qualification against greed
- 1 Peter 5:1-4
- Paul worked a job most often. 1 Corinthians 9:6 is posed as a question that he could quit working if he chose to.
