The King of kings
Text: Psalm 24
This psalm was written when David brought the ark up to Jerusalem and the intention was to point the people in the direction of a life of holiness and faith. It is this life that leads men to the presence of God.
Who has access to the majestic and holy LORD of all creation (vss 1-6)
- The LORD owns all the earth by virtue of creation. He is above all things. He is the Most High God.
- The Father is higher as in higher order, somewhat like a person is to a plant. The LORD, the Father is higher in order.
- His thoughts are not our thoughts.
- He can’t lie.
- He is holy and unchanging in character.
- He can’t be corrupted. He can’t be manipulated. He can’t be tempted.
- His understanding is infinite.
- He is good.
- Who shall ascend? Who has access to this throne?
- David knows the character of this “who” though he does not know the name.
- This is God’s generation – 24:6 This is the generation…
- God’s generation is characterized by clean hands that are not violent, but apt to good work. None that were ceremonially unclean might enter into the mountain of the temple, which signified that cleanness of conversation which is required in all those that have fellowship with God. The hands lifted up in prayer must be pure hands, no blot of unjust gain nor anything else that defiles the man and is offensive to the holy God.
- God’s generation is characterized by a pure heart that loves kindness, trusts and is trustworthy. If your religion is only outward while the heart is dirty then it is no religion at all. Blessed are the pure in heart. Paul said that you must call on God out of a pure heart and it is God who tries the hearts.
- God’s generation has not lifted himself to vanity in the sense of puffing himself up or congratulating his own righteousness.
- God’s generation are not liars, they speak the truth. They don’t falsely accuse or flatter. They lovingly say what is right.
- God’s generation is a praying generation. They seek the Lord.
- Matthew 1 begins like this: the generation of Jesus Christ.
- Jesus Christ is the way to the Father.
- John 3:13, 20:17
- Jesus says, I am the way.
- Ephesians 4:8-10
- Hebrews 8:1 We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; a minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched and not man.
- The only begotten Son is the generation who gives others power to become the sons of God
- John said those who believe in Jesus Christ are then given power to become the sons of God. They are part of this generation.
- This is what the Father is looking for. Because Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the Father’s will doesn’t mean the Father stopped caring about these qualities.
- Look at 1 Peter 2:1-10.
Welcome the King of glory! (vss 7-9)
- The King of Psalm 24 is the same as the Shepherd in Psalm 23.
- He is the Lord strong in battle.
- He is the Lord of hosts.
- Paul identified this King as well in 1 Timothy as the King eternal and the King of kings and Lord of lords. He said Christ was crowned by the Father in Philippians.
