The geographical layout of the inheritance
- The geography in this first old covenant will look like the character of Jacob’s sons.
- Joseph’s sons are given most of Reuben’s would be inheritance.
- Simeon is placed inside of Judah’s inheritance and Levi is scattered throughout the land.
- Zebulun is on the coast.
The leadership in the inheritance
- Judah will carry the seed of the king Messiah
- Disqualification of the first three brothers – Reuben, Simeon, and Levi – from carrying the physical seed of the Messiah.
- The Lord will get more specific about the particular line in Judah from which the Messiah would come. He’ll be in the line of David.
- Matthew will trace the LORD back through David.
- Verse 11 seems to be a reference to Judah offering himself a ransom for Benjamin and staying in Egypt so Benjamin will be free. Of course, Jesus Christ will also make it prophetic when he enters Jerusalem on a donkey the same week he is to offer himself a ransom for many.
- Joseph is the spiritual foundation though. The description of Joseph is the description of the Messiah’s triumph after rejection.
- The Messiah has to be a physical person, so he’ll have to come from some line of people. However, the preeminent attributes of the king are spiritual.
- Hebrews 1:8
- The character of these men has quite a bit to do with their futures and the future of their generations.
Jacob’s death
- He blesses and charges his children.
- He is buried in Canaan with his mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, and wife.
- Joseph gets this permission to bury his father in Genesis 50:1-6.
