Be Holy
Text: Titus 1:8
Don’t dismiss holiness as unreasonable
- Another one of these attributes that we write off as unreasonable while we hear the LORD expecting is holiness. We do this with the word good and we do it with this word holy.
- The problem is we define holy as sinless. But the word holy is associated with inanimate objects as well as people. So it isn’t about sinning per se. We have days that are holy called holidays.
Holiness is how something is related to God
- Holiness is becoming less important primarily because we put it out of reach, but also because it sounds like rules that no one is interested in.
- Holiness seems to be associating something with a higher purpose. When the LORD tries to make Israel a holy people, He is trying to associate them with Himself through revelation and light that gives them a way to walk.
- Holiness isn’t a bunch of rules. It is a way of relating something or someone to God. So being kind and loving people who love God are holy motivations because they are like God.
- Romans 11:16-17
Holiness is a command
- When we misidentify holiness and make it impossible to attain, we’re forced to ignore God’s command to people to be holy.
- Leviticus 19:2 and 20:7 to 1 Peter 1:15-16
