The Shepherd King

The Shepherd King

(The Manger)

Text: Luke 2:7-20

His birth is gloriously celebrated

  • There was a glorious announcement of the birth of the LORD Jesus Christ.
  • Good news of the birth of the Shepherd was first announced to faithful shepherds.
    • Israel’s history was a history of the word of God going to shepherds.
    • God’s people had a history of being faithful shepherds from righteous Abel to King David, from Abraham to Joseph to Moses, these men were pastoral leaders who cared for their flocks.
    • Teachers of the divine way who taught the word of God were called pastors.
    • The prophets were called pastors.
  • Jesus is the Savior to ALL people.
    • He is God’s gift to mankind
    • Jesus is a divine act of goodwill toward humanity. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
  • The Shepherd King of souls
    • The Good Shepherd in John 10
    • Jesus shows his sheep how to possess their souls in 1 Peter 2:21-3:1.

The shepherds know him by his sign

  • The savior is born as a Jewish child in the city of the shepherd king, named David.
  • The wise men saw a star, but the shepherds found the babe lying in a manger.
    • The sign of the manger is unmistakable, it is where the flock is fed.
    • He’s not on a military base because this is a sign of peace and goodwill.
  • No room in this world. No room in the inn.
    • Because of ignorance – Fully booked, wasn’t expecting this.
    • Because of indifference – Maybe you didn’t care he was coming. Religion isn’t your thing.
    • Because of the inconvenience – He makes life too complicated.
  • Here is Jesus Christ, the bread of life, to feed the flock of God.
    • Jesus would grow up and say, I am the bread of life: he that comes to me shall never hunger, and he that believes on me shall never thirst.
    • Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.
    • Never thirst again in John 4.

The shepherds are compelled to become evangelists for the Shepherd King (vss 15-20)

  • They’re compelled by their own experience with Jesus Christ.
  • They’re compelled because their reality matches the divine message they were given.
  • They’re compelled because it’s God’s will the message goes out.
